No. 10 Warhawk Men Close Non-Conference Slate at 11-0

The No. 10 ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater men's basketball team capped the 2018 calendar year and the non-conference portion of its season Saturday night with a 96-81 victory at Concordia Texas in the team's second of two games in Austin, Texas.

 

Five players scored in double figures for the Warhawks (11-0 overall), who shot 50.8 percent from the floor, hit 15-of-25 from 3-point range and knocked down 19-of-24 at the free-throw line, including 17-of-19 in the second half.

 

Senior forward Melvin Brown Jr. led UW-Whitewater in scoring with 21 points to go along with 14 rebounds and three blocks. Senior guard Dalton Menke hit six 3-pointers on his way to tying a career high with 20 points, and senior guard Mitchell Pfeifer hit five 3s in a 17-point, six-rebound, three-assist, two-steal performance.

 

Senior guard Malik Clements posted 14 points, and senior guard David Sachs hit all 10 of his free-throw attempts for 12 points to go along with a game-high eight assists.

 

Menke gave UW-Whitewater the lead at 7-5 with 15:51 on the clock, and the team led the rest of the way. His bucket started a 16-1 run during which he hit three more 3-pointers to give the team a 20-6 advantage with 12:30 on the clock.

 

Concordia Texas (3-10) cut its deficit in half by the midway point of the period , but the Warhawks ran off seven of the next eight points to bring the lead back to 13 with 8:09 to go in the half.

 

UW-Whitewater took its largest lead of the first half at 45-30 following a layup by Brown Jr. at the 3:05 mark. The team led by 10 at halftime.

 

The Tornados cut the UW-Whitewater lead to four early in the second half, but got no closer the rest of the way. Pfeifer hit three 3-pointers in a three-minute span to increase the Warhawk lead to 11 with 12:22 remaining.

 

Concordia Texas drew to within five at the 8:33 mark, but Clements hit a 3-pointer and Sachs hit a pair of free throws to double the UW-W advantage less than one minute later.

 

From there, the Tornados got no closer than nine points as the Warhawks hit 9-of-11 free throws over the final 5:29 of regulation.

 

UW-Whitewater begins Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play Wednesday at 12th-ranked UW-Stevens Point. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Stevens Point.
