HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 4, 2018)  – Sophomore Alec DiPietrantonio scored a season-high 21 points and pulled down 13 rebounds to record his first career double-double as the Stevens Institute of Technology men's basketball team overcame an eight-point first-half deficit to defeat Brooklyn College 72-62 Tuesday in a non-conference game at Canavan Arena.

Senior Ryan Coffey added 10 points and seven boards and junior JoJo Mosca shot 3-for-6 from behind the arc to power the Ducks, who won their third straight to improve to 6-2.

Jordan Wright scored 14 points and Michael Tesoriero added 13 for the Bulldogs, who fell to 6-2 and saw their four-game winning streak come to an end. Stevens has won each of the last three meetings between the teams.

Tesoriero sank a long three to open scoring and Wright made consecutive jumpers as Brooklyn scored on each of its first three possessions to take an early lead. Noah Shy drained a three to push the Bulldogs' lead to eight before Stevens rallied to tie the game at 27 on a Michael Zignorski free throw. The teams remained tied at the end of the half.

After the intermission, it was Stevens that came out strong, scoring on four of its first seven possessions to open a double-digit lead. Coffey bookended the run with a layup and a three and four different players scored during the game-changing sequence. The Ducks shot 47 percent from the field in the second half.

DiPietrantonio and Coffey combined to score 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting to spark Stevens' offense in the second half.

Pivotal Point

  • Stevens doubled its lead over a 30-second span in the final minutes to thwart Brooklyn's comeback bid.
  • After a Tesoriero three trimmed the Ducks' lead to four with 1:59 to play, Amari hit a floater in the paint on Stevens' next possession.
  • DiPietrantonio forced a Brooklyn turnover and then converted a second-chance basket to push Stevens' lead to 70-62 and force a Bulldog timeout with 69 seconds left in regulation.
  • Brooklyn would not score again. The Ducks closed out the game on a 6-0 run over the last 1:43.

Inside the Numbers

  • Stevens outshot Brooklyn, 39 percent to 33 percent, including a decisive 47%-33% in the second half. Brooklyn's 33 percent marked a season-low for an opponent.
  • The Ducks held a 46-35 edge on the boards, including a 13-7 advantage on the offensive glass. The rebounding led to 10 second-chance points for the Ducks.
  • The Ducks scored 15 fast-break points and held Brooklyn to just six.
  • Behind DiPietrantonio's season-high, the Ducks held a 36-20 edge in points in the paint. The Mount Laurel, New Jersey native has pulled down double-digit rebounds in three straight games.
  • The Ducks scored .923 points per possession and held Brooklyn to just .785.
  • Each team committed 16 turnovers and each team turned those turnovers into exactly nine points.
  • The Ducks made 14 free throws and shot 78 percent from the line, the team's second-highest percentage of the season.
  • Amari and classmate Kevin Florio combined for six assists. Stevens matched its season high with 13 helpers.

Unsung Hero

  • Junior Dylan Walsh came off the bench to score eight points, pull down four boards and an assist, while helping to slow down Wright down the stretch.

From the Court

  • "I thought Brooklyn came ready to play and they jumped out early on us. We were able to overcome the slow start as we played much better basketball in the second half. Our guys are continuing to improve and we are seeing flashes of it every day." - head coach Bobby Hurley
