ONEONTA, NY – Kevin Townes (Lagrangeville, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) and Pat Garey (Johnson City, NY/Johnson City) combined for 43 points on Thursday as Hartwick men's basketball defeated SUNY Delhi by the final score of 89-74 at Lambros Arena. The victory is Hartwick's third in a row. The Hawks are now 4-3 overall. Delhi drops to 3-3.
Townes netted a team-high 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting. He tied for a game-high eight rebounds and added four assists and a pair of threes. Garey made 8-of-14 from the floor, 5-of-8 from three-point range, and he contributed six points.
In a seesaw first half that saw nine lead changes and 10 tie scores, neither team led by more than five points until the final two and a half minutes. Delhi would take a 34-33 lead after two free throws from Justin Daoud with 3:45 to go. But a 13-2 run gave the Hawks their biggest lead of the half, 46-36, following a Townes' layup with under a minute left. The Broncos got the final two buckets and the Hawks went into the locker room up six, 46-40.
Townes (14), Garey (11), and Haskell (9) combined for 34 of the Hawks' 46 points in the half. The team would hit 44% from the floor but struggled from deep, making only 4-of-16.
A 10-4 spurt increased the lead to double-digits, 56-44, less than four minutes into the second half. The Broncos, however, would twice cut the deficit to just six points. The second came on a Carlos Ithier three-pointer that made the score 66-60 with 9:44 remaining in the game. A Justin Carruthers' (Greenwich, NY/Greenwich) layup followed by a three and a jumper by Garey built the lead back to 13. It would swell to 17 on a Sam Hanley (Cranston, RI/Cranston East) three-pointer with just under five minutes showing on the clock and the Hawks never led by less than 15 the rest of the way in the victory.
Hanley would reach double figures for the Hawks with 11 points. He hit a trio of three-pointers as well. Austin Haskell (Kirkwood, NY/Susquehanna Valley) contributed nine points and four rebounds. Kyle Bradshaw (Tinton Hills, NY/Brookdale CC) scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds.
