Head coach Greg Mitchell hated to see the Hope College men's basketball season end for many reasons.
The Flying Dutchmen suffered a 95-83 season-ending loss at ninth-ranked Augustana, Illinois on Saturday night in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament.
Hope — the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association regular-season co-champions and tournament champs — end with a 19-10 overall record.
"No. 1, you're not ready for it because you're so focused on the tournament and what our guys can do to win," Mitchell said. "The guys fought for 40 minutes. That's been this team, especially the last month of the season.
"It pains me to say goodbye to Dante (Hawkins) and Luke (Dreyer), and also this entire team. I couldn't be prouder. It's tough to walk away."
Hawkins closed a four-year Hope career with 22 points against Augustana. The senior guard from Holland, Michigan (Holland HS) finished with 1,268 points — 19th all-time among Flying Dutchmen scorers.
Hawkins equaled his career-high this season with 121 assists — tying Colly Carlson (1992-92) for seventh-most by a Hope player in a single season.
Beckman completed the second-most prolific scoring season in Flying Dutchmen history after netting a team-high 24 points and a season-high 10 rebounds against Augustana (24-5).
He totaled 625 points over 29 games in his debut season — second only to Floyd Brady's 712 points over 23 games during the 1967-68 season.
