NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. – The Maritime basketball team was defeated 94-76 to the New Rochelle Angels in a non-conference matchup at the Wellness Center on Sunday afternoon.

Senior guard John Liccese (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) led the Privateers with 17 points while center Patrick MacDonald (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius) had 13 points and 6 rebounds. Sophomore guard Brendan McGovern(Seaford, N.Y./St. John the Baptist) added 12 points and classmate Michael Walker (Bayport, N.Y./Bayport-Blue Point) tallied 11 points along with seven rebounds.

Both teams struggled in the opening minute missing shots and turning the ball over. At the 19:00 minute mark, Brennan Whelan (Northport, N.Y./Northport) got a steal that would lead to the first basket of the game, a layup by McGovern.

New Rochelle scored the next six points to go ahead 6-2. That would be the start of a 14-4 run making the score 14-6. New Rochelle would stay ahead by a comfortable lead up until around the midway point in the first half, when Maritime made a run. After a Chris Ruscillo (Carle Place, N.Y./Carle Place) free throw, Walker knocked down a three-pointer off the pass from Liccese. Then Liccese scored a layup to cut the lead to one, 31-30, off the offensive rebound from Walker.

New Rochelle answered back shortly after with a 12-0 run to extend their lead up to 13 points, and they would eventually go into the break up 54-46. The Privateers shot 48% in the first 20 minutes including seven three-pointers.

The Privateers could not get the lead back under 10 points the rest of the way as New Rochelle would win by a final score of 94-76.
