Big Second Half Sparks Gwynedd Mercy Men Past Clarks Summit

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Behind a career-high 27 points from Courtney Cubbage and 23 from Will Davis, Gwynedd Mercy used a big second half to surge past Clarks Summit, 89-69, Thursday evening at The Griffin Complex in a rescheduled Colonial States Athletic Conference contest from the night prior.

Cubbage was 10-of-13 from the field and added six rebounds and four steals. Davis would net 17 of his points in the second half, as the Griffins (17-4, 12-2 CSAC) shot just under 65% in the frame. Rip Engel handed out a personal-best 10 assists to help GMercyU sweep the season series over the Defenders.

Duke Guo registered 17 points off the bench to lead Clarks Summit (1-21, 0-15 CSAC), who battled for three ties and five lead changes in the first 20 minutes. The Griffins held a close 32-30 advantage heading into the lockerrooms.

The second half saw Gwynedd come out firing, as a 14-3 run to open the stanza was capped by bucket and a foul by Manny Lopez for a 49-33 edge less than five minutes into the half. Clarks Summit stayed within reach thanks to their six three-pointers in the half, 10 total on the night. John McCloskey hit his fourth of the half with 7:40 remaining to make it a 10-point contest (69-59).

Cubbage's three-point play off a nice feed inside from Engel put the wrap on a 10-0 spurt with 4:48 remaining to turn the tide for good.

McCloskey finished with 12 points with teammate Reed Plantz scoring 16 and Will Smoot 12 respectively.

Engel totaled five points and four rebounds with Rich Dunham adding eight points, four assists, a team-high eight rebounds. Matt Carter was 3-for-3 from downtown in the second half. GMercyU converted 20 CSU turnovers into 28 points while holding a 39-28 rebound edge.
