Chicago Holds Off Rochester, 72-65, at the Palestra

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Chicago's Collin Barthel beat the shot clock buzzer with a three-pointer to snuff out a Rochester rally and the Maroons went on to a 72-65 victory over the Yellowjackets at the Louis Alexander Palestra on Sunday afternoon.

Rochester native Jake Fenlon (McQuaid Jesuit HS) led the visitors with 24 points, including six three-pointers. Barthel scored 11 points and hauled down 13 rebounds. Noah Karras scored nine points and Jake Berhost had eight points.

Ryan Clamage, who played scholastically at Lake Forest Academy in the Chicagoland area, led Rochester with 16 points and nine rebounds. Andrew Lundstrom contributed 13 points off the bench while Jacob Wittig had 12 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Rochester used an 8-2 run to pull within 63-59 with 1:51 to play after Lundstrom scored on a fast break. In the front court, Chicago swung the ball around against pressure and found Barthel just to the left of the key. With the shot clock below two seconds, he fired and it rattled in, giving the Maroons a 66-59 edge.

Chicago is 8-10 overall, 4-3 in the University Athletic Association. The win was just the second on the road for Chicago this season. Rochester is 13-5 overall, 4-3 in the UAA. Rochester, Chicago, and Case Western Reserve are all tied for third place in the UAA standings behind Washington (MO) (7-0) and Emory (6-1). UR plays at Washington next Friday and Chicago next Sunday. UC hosts Emory Friday, Rochester Sunday.

The last time Chicago played at Rochester on a Sunday was Super Bowl Sunday (February 7, 2016), the Yellowjackets hit a three-pointer at the overtime buzzer after an intentionally missed free throw to pull out a 77-76 victory. UC was ranked #21 in Division III at the time.  When the team smeet next Sunday, it will be Super Bowl Sunday again.
