Adams Scores 16 for R-MC Men's Basketball vs. EMU

ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Montese Adams (Richmond, Va./Fuqua) scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team dropped a 70-69 overtime decision to Eastern Mennonite in ODAC action Wednesday evening in Crenshaw Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (13-5, 7-2 ODAC) remain in a tie for second place in the conference standings. The Royals moved to 8-9 overall and 3-6 in league play.

Adams was 7 for 11 from the floor and 2 for 3 beyond the arc. Senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) had 13 points off the bench and dished out a career-best seven assists. Freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) finished with 10 points.

EMU was hot from the floor to start the contest, building a 20-8 lead in the game's first 11 minutes. Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) hit a pair of three-pointers and Adams sank a trey as part of a 9-2 spurt as R-MC pulled within five at 22-17 with 6:10 remaining in the half. The Royals put together a 12-2 run to take a 34-19 advantage with 1:35 left. A three-pointer by freshman Terry Woods (Burlington, N.C./Burlington School) and a layup by Adams made it a 10-point game at 34-24 with 45 seconds remaining before a bucket by EMU made it 36-24 at the break. Adams had seven points and Midulla added six in the first period.

The Yellow Jackets started the second half on an 8-2 spurt, with junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) scoring five and sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) nailing a trey, to make the score 38-32 three minutes into the second period. The Royals hit three treys in a 9-2 run as the visitors took a 47-34 with 13:45 remaining. Noe had seven points in a 17-0 run for R-MC as the home team took a 51-47 advantage with 8:30 left. EMU used a 6-2 spurt to tie the game at 53-53 before buckets by Noe and Midulla gave the Yellow Jackets a 57-53 lead with 5:15 remaining. The Royals cut it to two before a three-pointer by Adams gave R-MC a 60-55 edge with 2:50 left. After EMU tallied five straight to tie it at 60-60, Noe scored in the paint to give the Yellow Jackets a 62-60 advantage with 1:30 remaining. A bucket by EMU tied it with 1:10 left and regulation ended 62-62.

EMU started the scoring in overtime with a three-pointer before a one-hander by Adams made it 65-64 with 2:20 remaining. A pair of free throws gave the Royals a 67-64 edge before a rebound and layup by Anthony made it 67-66 with 37.3 seconds left. EMU hit three free throws in the final 3.3 seconds and a three-pointer by Anthony at the buzzer made the final 70-69 in favor of the Royals.

Williams matched Adams with seven caroms. Woods recorded a season-best five assists.

Randolph-Macon hosts Randolph on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Crenshaw Gym.
