Another Rodgers Buzzer-Beater Lifts WPI Past Emerson in NEWMAC Men’s Basketball Action

Boston, MA --- WPI senior Chris Rodgers (Franklin, MA)  delivered the game-winning jumper as time expired to lift WPI to a 74-73 victory over host Emerson in a NEWMAC Men's Basketball contest Wednesday night in Brown & Plofker Gym.

The Engineers, who have now won their last three, improve to 9-7 on the year and 3-2 in NEWMAC matchups. The Lions, meanwhile, even out at 8-8 and are now 2-3 in the league.

Tied at 71 with exactly 15 seconds left, senior Aaron Todd (York, ME) hit the first of a pair of free throws. Senior Michael Sheng (Altadena, CA) hauled in the rebound and went coast-to-coast to give the Lions the lead with 7.3 to go. Rodgers then drove down the court, quickly set and then shot the buzzer-beater.

It's the second time Rodgers has thwarted Emerson as he also did it on February 1, 2017 with a baseline jumper with 1.1 to play. He also beat Clark with a floater with .4 seconds left on January 20, 2016. The three daggers is the most in the past six years as Zach Karalis did it twice and Aaron Davis accomplished it once.

Todd and sophomore Jake Wisniewski (West Brookfield, MA) each led the Crimson and Gray with a dozen points. Rodgers and freshman Jake Needleman (Morganville, NJ) each added 10 in the triumph. Rookie Reid Walker (Lithia, FL) paced the team with eight boards.

Sheng highlighted all players with 21 points and junior Geoffrey Gray (Newton, MA) followed with 18 to go with eight helpers. Sophomore Jack O'Connor (Newport, RI) handed in a double-double of 15 points and a game-best 11 rebounds.

WPI hosts Clark Saturday at approximately 4pm in the second game of a NEWMAC doubleheader. Emerson completes a three-game homestand with Wheaton Saturday at 3pm.
