Williams Leads Balanced Attack as R-MC Men's Hoops Tops W&L 84-75

ASHLAND, Va. - Junior Darryl Williams (Columbia, Md./Glenelg Country) recorded his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds as the Randolph-Macon men's basketball team had five score in double figures for the first time this season in an 84-75 ODAC victory over Washington and Lee Saturday afternoon in Crenshaw Gym.

The Yellow Jackets (12-3, 6-0 ODAC) extended their win streak to six. R-MC remains in a first-place tie with Emory & Henry in the conference standings. The Generals (10-5, 5-1 ODAC) suffered their first league loss.

Williams went 4 for 5 from the floor and hit all four of his free throw attempts. Junior Montese Adams scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half. He was 7 for 11 from the floor for the game and hit a pair of three-pointers. Freshman Buzz Anthony (Arnold, Md./Archbishop Spalding) also had 11 of his 15 points in the second stanza. He set a season high with 10 assists. Junior Grayson Midulla (Glen Allen, Va./Glen Allen) had 13 points and senior Daniel Noe (Fairfax, Va./Bishop Ireton) added 10 points.

W&L scored the first five points of the game before Midulla had the final seven points of a 9-0 run as R-MC led  9-5 with 16:25 left in the first period. Williams had a pair of layups to give the Yellow Jackets a 13-7 advantage with 15:40 remaining. The Generals would tally eight straight points to push ahead 15-13 with 14:15 remaining. Another layup by Williams capped a 14-8 spurt as R-MC went up 27-23 with 8:15 on the clock. The Yellow Jackets trailed 34-31 before a three-pointer by Adams knotted the game at 34-34. W&L sank two free throws before sophomore Korey Turner (Midlothian, Va./Amelia Academy) made a pair of foul shots with one minute remaining to make it a 36-36 deadlock at halftime. Midulla paced R-MC with 10 first-half points, while Williams added six.

The Generals jumped out to a 51-45 advantage five minutes into the second half before junior Luke Neeley (Orange, Va./Woodberry Forest) nailed a pair of treys to spark an 18-3 run as the Yellow Jackets took a 63-54 lead with 7:50 remaining. W&L scored eight straight points to pull within one at 63-62 with 5:50 left. Anthony had a three-pointer to push the advantage to four at 66-62. After a three-point play by the Generals cut the deficit to one, Noe had a follow and a trey, Williams added a layup and two free throws, and Anthony hit both ends of a one-and-one to give R-MC a 77-65 lead with 1:15 left. The Yellow Jackets scored its final 11 points from the foul line. R-MC hit 11 of 13 foul shots in the final 2:40 (6 of 7 for Anthony) to secure the 84-75 win.

The Yellow Jackets hit 7 of 14 three-point attempts in the second half. Neeley went 3 for 4 from behind the arc following intermission for nine points.

R-MC had 25 assists on its 30 field goals. Midulla had a season-high four, matching his career high.

The Yellow Jackets held a 38-33 advantage on the boards. Noe tied his season high with seven.

Randolph-Macon returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 17 with a 7 p.m. home ODAC contest against rival Hampden-Sydney in Crenshaw Gym.
