Montclair, NJ – Senior guard Jovanni Chatham scored a team-high 21 points while senior forward Jarrett Bogus added 19 and nine rebounds as Montclair State snapped a long losing streak against Rutgers-Newark with a 73-66 victory at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.

Senior guard Daniel Ramis added 12 points as the Red Hawks (5-2, 2-1 NJAC) ended a 12-game losing streak against the Scarlet Raiders (2-4, 0-3 NJAC) dating back over six years. MSU last win came at the Golden Dome in Newark on November 30, 2011 in a 75-69 triumph.

Tyler Ofray pumped in a game-high 24 points leading three players in double figures for Rutgers-Newark, which dropped its second straight contest. Mark Thomas and Chase Barneys added 13 and 12 points respectively.

Each team reeled off a five-point run in the first four minutes and then battled back and forth as the lead changed hands seven times and was tied on seven other occasions. After the Scarlet Raiders went up 23-21, Ramis drilled a three to give MSU its first lead at 24-23 with 7:16 left. Thomas flipped the lead back the other way with a dunk a minute later and the back and forth continued with the Red Hawks taking the lead 30-27 after two foul shots by Chatham and a dunk by Justin Porter with 2:12 to go. The Radiers' Kenya Brown's tip-in rebound at the buzzer allowed MSU to head to intermission up 32-31.

In the second half, Montclair State led 38-37 with 17 minutes left before putting together a 16-9 run over the next seven minutes going up 54-46 as Chatham went coast-to-coast for a layup. A three-point from Joseph Radi gave MSU a nine-point bulge midway through the period however Rutgers-Newark erased that deficit and went back in front 62-61 as Ofray hit two from the line.

Montclair, which did not hit a field goal in the final 4:58, won it from the foul line converting 11 of its 13 chances. Chatham made all eight of his attempts while Bogus sank his three. A Thomas layup with 1:23 remaining got Rutgers-Newark within 67-64. MSU had a chance to extend the lead but missed twice. Bogus came up with a huge offensive rebound off the second miss which turned into two free throws pushing the lead to 69-64 with 58 seconds. After a miss at the other end, Chatham hit two and made another pair with 21 seconds left giving MSU a 73-64 lead.

Chatham, who was 13-of-14 at the line, added five rebounds and three assists while Jordan Roberson chipped in with six points and seven rebounds. The Red Hawks shots 50 percent (22-of-44) from the field and held a 35-30 advantage on the boards.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, December 6 taking the short nine-mile trek to Wayne, NJ to face William Paterson at the WPU Rec Center beginning at 8:00 pm.
