PASADENA — Zach Baines scored 19 points on 8 for 15 shooting and Jay Miller added 14 points, including the game-winning three-pointer as time expired, leading the Occidental men's basketball team to a 65-64 comeback win at Caltech on Saturday.

After Ricky Galliani made one of two free throws for the Beavers with 6 seconds to play to give Caltech a 63-61 lead, Miller took the inbounds pass the length of the court to the right wing, stepped back to his left and buried a difficult shot with Alec Andrews in his face.

The Tigers stormed the court, celebrating their third victory in a row.

From the Coach: "We have tons of respect for Coach Eslinger, Caltech and the competitive nature of their players, especially Galliani, Nasser Al-Rayes and David LeBaron. This was just another fun chapter in our 110 Freeway rivalry," Oxy head coach Brian Newhall said. "It's nice for our seniors Jay, AJ and Joe to win their final road game at Caltech. "

Oxy beat Whittier and La Verne by 20+ points in its last two games.

Andrew Johnson added 10 points and nine rebounds, and Austin DeWitz added eight points and eight rebounds for Oxy. Caleb Yellin-Flaherty scored six points and had three rebounds off the bench.

The Tigers trailed 60-50 with 5 minutes to play. Ryan Kaneshiro set the tone with ball pressure and the Tigers began to full court press and push the pace on offense, getting Caltech out of its pound-it-out game.

Baines scored the next six points and Miller cut it to a one-possession game with a jumper with 3 minutes to go.

Galliani led Caltech with 17 points, David LeBaron scored 16 and David Kawashima added 12.

Season Impact: Oxy improves to 12-8 overall and 4-7 in SCIAC play.
