Gallaudet rallies to defeat Bridgewater in overtime, 76-71

HARRISONBURG, Va. - The Gallaudet University men's basketball team began the 2016-17 season with a 76-71 overtime victory over Bridgewater (Va.) College here Friday night at Eastern Mennonite University in Yoder Arena.

Freshman guard Noah Valencia (Riverside, Calif.) made quite the debut as he poured in 27 points to go with four steals and two rebounds. Valencia made 9 of 16 shots from the field and went 7-for-13 from 3-point range. Junior forward Andy Cruz (Bronx, N.Y.) added 21 points, 12 rebounds, five steals and three assists.

Senior center Joshua McGriff (Somerset, N.J.) recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks. Senior guard Raymond Nelson (Riverside, Calif.) added 11 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two steals off the bench.

Gallaudet (1-0) battled back in the second half and tied the game at 61 with 2:37 left in regulation with a McGriff made free throw. Valencia made a 3-pointer at the 1:54 mark as GU led 64-61. Bridgewater knotted the game at 64 thanks to three free throw attempts made. The Bison had a shot to win it in regulation but Valencia turned the ball over with 11 ticks left on the clock.
