BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Clifton Lyerly turned in a season high 37-points in The College at Brockport men's basketball team's rout of State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foes Plattsburgh State on Friday, 96-87.

The Golden Eagles improve to 13-3 on the year and 8-1 in league play while the Cardinals fall to 6-9 and 2-7 in the SUNYAC.

In a battle with the reining SUNYAC champions, head coach Greg Dunne's squad had their work cut out for them, with several lead changes and ties to open the contest. After a Lyerly layup knotted the game for the fourth time, the and-one free throw gave the Green and Gold a 15-14 lead with 10:21 to play.

Lyerly worked to hold on to the lead despite the charging Cardinals, and knocked down back-to-back treys for the 21-20 edge. The contest continued to be a tight race, with the Golden Eagles pushing to their largest lead of the half with 2:21 to play, following a Lyerly layup and a Justin Summers score for the 38-34 advantage.

A Hamed Shamseldin put-back and free throw conversion closed the half for the Green and Gold, while a last second shot for Plattsburgh fell, making the halftime score 43-41.

At the half, the Golden Eagles were led by Lyerly, who netted 24 and picked up five rebounds. Shamseldin chipped in nine while Marcus Blythers added six points and six rebounds.

In the second half, Brockport broke open the lead, posting an 11-2 run, with scores from Marcus Blythers, Lyerly and a triple from Shamseldin to post a 54-43 advantage by the 16:57 mark. The Golden Eagles worked to keep a healthy distance, and maintained their double-digit lead through most of the second half.

In the waning minutes of play, the Green and Gold saw their lead diminish slightly, with the Cardinals pulling to within six, but a solid Brockport squad remained confident, and pulled out the 96-87 win.

Lyerly led all scorers with 37 points, adding seven rebounds, five assists and two steals. Shamseldin added 22 points, six assists and five rebounds as well, while David Clark chipped in 13 points.

Brockport forced 19 Plattsburgh turnovers, which they used for 26 points, and turned in 12 fast break points. The Green and Gold shot 43.2 percent from the field in the contest, while holding the Cardinals to just 38.8 percent from the floor.

The Golden Eagles will be back in action on Dec. 21 when they host SUNY Potsdam.
