RIC Shocks Undefeated Wesleyan, 62-55

Middletown, Conn.--Sophomore forward Benjamin Vezele (Providence, RI) recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Rhode Island College men's basketball team to a 62-55 victory over previously undefeated Wesleyan on Tuesday evening.

 

Senior forward Domonique Bull (Worcester, MA) also had a double-double for RIC (5-6) with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Junior guard Jovel Beckford (Providence, RI) and sophomore guard Jimmy Fritzson (Sharon, MA) were also in double-figures with 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

 

Senior forward Joseph Kuo (New York, NY) paced Wesleyan (11-1) with a game-high 23 points, five rebounds and four blocks, while junior forward Nathan Krill (Saint Helena, CA) contributed 13 points and nine boards in the setback.

 

After trading baskets with the score tied, 11-11, midway through the first half, RIC went on a 13-3 run, capped by a layup by sophomore forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) with 2:46 left in the stanza, to take the 24-14 lead. The Anchormen held a 28-21 advantage heading into the locker room at halftime.

 

Wesleyan battled back throughout the second half and took a one point, 45-44, lead on a layup by Kuo with just under eight minutes left in the contest. RIC regained the advantage just over a minute later after a pair of free throws by Vezele put the Anchormen up, 46-45, with 6:36 remaining. RIC never relinquished the lead and held on down the stretch for the 62-55 victory.

 

RIC shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the field, 13.3 percent (2-for-15) from behind the three-point stripe and 66.7 percent (14-of-21) from the free throw line. Wesleyan shot 33.8 percent (25-of-74) from the field, 8.7 percent (2-of-23) from three-point land and 37.5 percent (3-for-8) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Elms on Thursday, Jan. 5 (7 p.m.).
