Compagno One Assist Shy of Triple-Double in Win

LOS ANGELES — Joe Compagno was one assist shy of a triple-double, Andrew Johnson scored 23 points and the Occidental men's basketball team beat Shepherd University 81-73 at Rush Gym on Monday.

Compagno, a senior guard from Larkspur, scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out nine assists. He was a one-man offensive machine, going by defenders and then jump-stopping before setting up teammates for easy buckets.

Austin Dewitz scored 17 points on 8 for 9 shooting, Caleb Yellin-Flaherty added 10 points off of the bench and Ryan Kaneshiro had five assists, no turnovers and played excellent on-ball defense. 

Yellin-Flaherty did most of his work at the beginning of the second half, scoring eight points during a 16-5 Oxy run that extended the Tigers' lead to 20 points with 10:21 remaining. 

The Tigers shot 53 percent from the field, their third game in a row shooting at least 50 percent.

Season Impact: Oxy moves to 8-2 on the season. Shepherd goes to 4-14.

Next Game: The Tigers are back to SCIAC play on Thursday against Caltech at 7 p.m. at Rush Gym.
