More news about: Occidental

LOS ANGELES — Andrew Johnson recorded his fifth 20+ point game of the season with 26 points, as the Occidental men's basketball team pulled away from Fraser Valley in the second half for a 77-59 win at Westmont College on Friday.

Season Impact: The Tigers improve to 6-2 overall. Fraser Valley, a Canadian team, falls to 5-8.

Johnson, a two-time All-SCIAC selection, went 12 for 21 from the field, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out four assists. The senior from Loyola went 6 for 11 to lead Oxy with 15 points and nine rebounds the night before against Cal Maritime in the first game of the Tom Byron Classic.

Johnson and the Tigers got an unexpected boost from sophomore Brandon Ruotolo, who scored nine points off of the bench on 4 for 5 shooting in a season-high 17 minutes. Caleb Yellin Flaherty added six points, eight rebounds and three steals off the bench, playing a good all-around game.

Oxy's Ryan Kaneshiro had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists, and Jeevin Sandhu added 12 points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Austin Dewitz led the Tigers and the game with nine rebounds and also had six assists.

Vijay Dhillon led Fraser Valley with 15 points on five 3-pointers. But as soon as Oxy neutralized his outside shooting, the Tigers were able to guard Fraser Valley well.

Oxy jumped out to a 12-point lead before ending the first half with just two points in the last 6 minutes, trailing 33-32 at the break. In the second half, the score was tied with 9 minutes left before Oxy went on a 24-6 run to close the game.

The Tigers have their third game in three days, playing Cal Miramar University at Life Pacific College in San Dimas at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
