Early 19-0 Run Helps Drew Defeat Rutgers-Newark

MADISON, N.J. (Dec. 17, 2016) – Four Rangers scored in double-digits and sophomore centerNate Aldrich recorded his fifth double-double of the season as the Drew University men's basketball team defeated Rutgers-Newark, 67-57, Saturday afternoon in Baldwin Gymnasium.
 
By the Numbers: The Rangers have now put together a three-game winning streak and moved to 5-4 on the year, while improving their home record to 3-1. The Scarlet Raiders drop to 4-8 overall and had a two-game win streak stopped in Madison.
 
Top Performers
• Sophomore guard Dan Roibal proved again to be a dominant force on the court, leading the Rangers in scoring with 18 points to go with five rebounds and a career-high six assists.
• Sophomore forward Nate Aldrich pulled in a season-high 19 rebounds, also scoring 10 points for his fifth double-double of the year.
• Sophomore guard Darius Reiter shot well from beyond the arc, hitting 3-of-6 three-point field goals. Reiter finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
• Freshman Riley Collins scored 13 points with two 3-pointers in his first career start at point guard. Collins also shot 5-of-7 from the free throw line and collected five assists.
 
Turning Point: The first 10 minutes of play were seemingly all Drew needed to send Rutgers-Newark home packing. The Rangers used a 19-0 run over the span of eight minutes to take a 22-2 lead midway through the opening half.
 
Highlights
• The Raiders chipped away at Drew's 20-point lead down the stretch of the opening half, eventually heading into the intermission down 35-23.
• Early in the second half, Collins broke away from his defender and caught a beautiful pass off Roibal's inbound and hit his second 3-pointer from the corner. It was the second of back-to-back threes to start the scoring in the second for Drew, who led 41-23 at the 17:26 mark.
• With 7:43 to play, Rutgers-Newark launched a comeback with a 15-3 run. Now leading just 58-53 with 3:39 left, Collins helped Drew ice the contest by hitting 5-of-6 at the free throw line over the final three minutes.

• Drew shot 47 percent from the field with a 33 percent mark ( from beyond the arc.
• The Rangers struggled at the free throw line, shooting 11-23.
• Drew played smart team basketball with 15 assists on 24 total field goals, compared to seven on 21 for Rutgers-Newark.

• The rebounding battle was relatively even with the Scarlet Raiders pulling down 39 to the Rangers' 38.
