John Carroll knocks off #3 Marietta 88-76

UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, Ohio — John Carroll University outscored No. 3 ranked Marietta College by 17 points in the second half as the Blue Streaks upset the Pioneers, 88-76, Saturday (Dec. 10) afternoon. The Loss drops Marietta to 7-1 overall and 2-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll improves to 3-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.

Keith Richardson led all scorers with a career-high 31 points. Dillon Young sank seven three-pointers and finished with 22 points. A.J. Edwards notched a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

Simon Kucharewicz led five Blue Streaks in double figures. Ryan Berger chipped in with 17 points, while David Linane had 14 and Brian Papich and John Cirillo each had 12 points. Papich grabbed eight boards and Kucharewicz had seven rebounds.

Marietta led by as many as eight points in the first half as Young nailed 4-of-4 from three-point range. Richardson hit a trey at the buzzer to give the Pioneers a 36-31 lead at the break.

John Carroll regrouped at halftime and quickly tied the game, 39-39, less than two minutes into the second half. The teams traded small leads over the next several minutes and a pair of free throws from Richardson with 14:42 left in the game evened the score at 45-45.

The Blue Streaks ran off a 14-1 run to build a 13-point advantage, 59-46, with 11:03 remaining. Young answered with a three-pointer to trigger a 10-point Pioneer run cutting the JCU lead to three, 59-56, at the 8:17 mark.

10 straight points from John Carroll pushed the margin back to 13points, 71-58, with just over fine minutes remaining. The Blue Streaks hit 13-of-16 free throws down the stretch to secure the upset victory.

For the game, Marietta shot 37.3% (22-of-59) from the floor, 46.2% (12-of-26) from three-point range and 80.0% (20-of-25) at the free throw line. John Carroll was 28-of-59 (47.5%) from the floor, 6-of-18 (33.3%) behind the arc and 26-of-38 (68.4%) at the line.

The Blue Streaks outrebounded Marietta 42-35. The Pioneers committed 19 turnovers in the game, while John Carroll turned the ball over just eight times.

After three straight games on the road, Marietta returns home to host Wilmington College next Saturday (Dec. 17) in a 3 p.m. contest.
