Yeshiva Rallies Past Maritime to Stay Perfect in Skyline Play

NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Yeshiva University men's basketball team overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half to knock off Skyline Conference rival Maritime College, 93-85, at the Max Stern Athletic Center on Thursday evening. Yeshiva now extends its winning streak to five games, and advances its record to 4-0 in Skyline play.

Sophomore guard Judah Cohen led the way for Yeshiva, scoring a game-high 24 points with nine rebounds, three assists, and one blocked shot. Senior forward Michael Berg added 14 points with nine boards, a game-high seven assists, and four steals. Sophomore guard Justin Hod scored a career-high 13 points with three rebounds.

Yeshiva (6-3, 4-0 Skyline) started the game off strongly, as a layup by Cohen put Yeshiva up, 7-0, 1:14 into the contest. After Cohen hit a pair of free throws to extend Yeshiva's lead to 12-2, Maritime (4-4, 1-2 Skyline) shifted momentum into its favor by scoring 11 unanswered points in a span of 2:08 to take the lead.

With Yeshiva down, 21-17, Cohen scored five points on back-to-back offensive possessions, capped off by a three-pointer, to regain a one-point lead for the Maccabees with 11:01 left in the opening half.

After the Privateers built a seven-point lead, Yeshiva scored nine unanswered points, capped off by a three-point field goal from Justin Hod, to give Yeshiva a 36-34 lead, with 3:34 remaining in the half. In a blink of an eye, Maritime hit three consecutive shots from beyond the arc to go into the intermission with a commanding 46-36 lead.

The Privateers scored on the opening possession of the second half, to extend their lead to 48-36. Later in the stanza, senior forward Dean Pienica and Justin Hod combined for back-to-back three-point field goals to cut Maritime's lead to 51-46. After a free throw by the visiting team, Yeshiva went on a 6-0 run, capped off by a layup from sophomore forward Tal Gweta, that tied the game at 52 with 14:09 remaining in regulation time. After Berg grabbed a defensive rebound, he threw an outlet pass to Justin Hod, who laid it up and in off the fast break to give the Maccabees their first lead since the opening half, 54-53.

Later in the period, Maritime regained momentum and went up 66-60. YU answered back, as freshman forward Daniel Katz launched a three-point field goal, to begin an 11-0 run for the home team, that ended with another three-pointer from Katz, giving Yeshiva a 71-66 advantage with 7:31 left.

The game was tied at 73, until Katz found Berg, who laid it up and in to help Yeshiva regain the lead, with 5:52 to go. The Privateers scored six of the game's next seven points to retake the advantage, 79-76. Berg answered with back-to-back layups to put Yeshiva up 80-79, with 4:28 left.

After Maritime's free throw tied the game, Pienica laid the ball up and in to give Yeshiva the lead for good, 82-80. A couple of possessions later, Katz drained a pair of free throws to extend the Maccabees' lead to 85-81 with 3:05 left to play. With just over a minute left, Cohen converted a layup to give Yeshiva more breathing room, 87-81. In the final minute, the Macs were able to hit their free throws to clinch the key Skyline win.

For the game, Katz produced 13 points and grabbed five rebounds, while Pienica added 11 points with six boards. Gweta added six points, while senior guard Jordan Hod and freshman guard Simcha Halpert each scored five. Sophomore forward Michael Hayon produced two points.

Yeshiva will hit the road on Monday, for a Skyline Conference game at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, on Monday beginning at 8:00 p.m.
