Delpeche twins spark Bates men's basketball to 74-60 win over Bowdoin

More news about: Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- Marcus Delpeche scored a game-high 25 points, Malcolm Delpeche tallied a double-double and the Bates men's basketball team took an early lead and never looked back in their 74-60 victory over Bowdoin in a non-league game Wednesday night at Alumni Gym.

Malcolm Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) blocked one shot in the contest to bring his career total to 127 blocks, tying Delpeche with Dave Larrivee '88 for the most blocked shots in Bates history.

After dropping two games last year to the Polar Bears (4-3), the Bobcats (5-2) made sure Bowdoin never really had a chance in Wednesday's contest.

With 16:29 to go in the first half, sophomore Max Hummel (Glastonbury, Conn.) nailed a jumper to give the Bobcats a 5-4 lead.

They never trailed again.

Hummel followed up his two-pointer with back-to-back threes, bringing the crowd to their feet and extending the lead to 11-4 with 15:24 to go in the half.

Marcus Delpeche '17 (Wilmington, Del.) made back-to-back layups and senior Quin Leary (Auburn, Maine) drilled a three to make the score 18-4 in favor of Bates, forcing the Polar Bears to call timeout for the third time in the first seven minutes of action.

The 16-0 run gave Bates a commanding 14-point lead. The teams actually played to a tie for the remainder of the contest but the Bobcats led by as many as 21 points along the way and Bowdoin never seriously threatened to make the game close.

With 32 seconds to go in the first half, senior captain Jerome Darling (Hartford, Conn.) drilled a three and drew a foul in the process. He made the free throw for a rare four-point play, making the score 43-24 in favor of the Bobcats at halftime.

The Bobcats simply could not miss from three-point range in the first half, knocking down seven of nine triples to go along with 63 percent shooting overall. Six different Bobcats hit threes in the first half.

In the second half, the Delpeche twins energized the crowd with some spectacular dunks. Malcolm Delpeche threw one down with 16:27 left in the contest and Marcus Delpeche tallied one of his own with 11:38 remaining to give Bates a 55-38 lead.

15 of Marcus Delpeche's game-high 25 points came in the second half.

The Polar Bears out-scored Bates 36-31 in the second half thanks to the shooting of Jack Bors and David Reynolds off the bench. Bors scored 13 of his team-high 16 points in the second half while Reynolds put up nine of his 15 points by making all three of his three-point attempts in the second half.

The Polar Bears got to within 11 points with two minutes remaining on a Bors layup, but that's as close as they got. Marcus Delpeche sank a pair of free throws and threw down another dunk in the final two minutes of action to finish things off.

Marcus Delpeche grabbed eight rebounds and played outstanding defense all night against Bowdoin's leading scorer Jack Simonds, who entered the contest averaging 24.5 points per game. Delpeche held Simonds to 12 points on 4-14 shooting.

Malcolm Delpeche scored 12 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for his double-double. He also dished out four assists. Hummel also finished with 12 points.

Meanwhile Darling delivered a very balanced performance at point guard, scoring eight points, grabbing nine rebounds and tallying a game-high seven assists.

Bates out-rebounded Bowdoin 51-30 and out-shot the Polar Bears 47.5% to 32.4% from the field.

The Bobcats are back in action at Alumni Gym Saturday for another non-league game against a NESCAC rival as they welcome the Colby College Mules to town for a 6:00 p.m. tip.
