SVC improves to 2-0 in PAC with win over W&J

The SVC men's basketball team improved to 2-0 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference with a 75-56 victory at home against Washington & Jefferson College.

The opening tip was followed by an array of three-point shooting from both sides. Coy Patterson Jr netted the first points for either side with a deep ball and scored the Bearcats first five points from the field. The Presidents and Bearcats soon caught fire shooting a combined 5-6 from the arc within the first five minutes of the contest. Eventually the hot hand simmered down for the visiting team as the Bearcats began an 8-point run, capped by a mid-range jumper from Matt D'Amicomaking the Bearcat lead 25-12 with 8:28 remaining in the half.

After a couple of buckets from SVC, the Presidents went on their own 8-0 run, cutting into the Bearcat lead to 30-25 with under five minutes to play. Junior guard Jason Capco then displayed his toughness by capitalizing on a few hard drives to the basket and led the Bearcats to a 42-28 lead with his 9 points by the end of the half.  
 
The Bearcats opened up the scoring in the second half with Austin Ford finishing down low, scoring two of his team high 14 points. After a sequence of trading buckets, Mike Simmons came off the bench a hit a deep outside shot from the corner while getting knocked down. Following the made free-throw, his four-point play made the Bearcats lead 54-36.

The Bearcats then went on a 9-0 run which ended at the 7:37 mark when Capco had ended his scoring night netting a three from the wing and extending the Bearcat lead to 24 points, the largest of the game.

The Presidents' long range shooting that kept them in the game early had tailed off as the Bearcat defense was able to hold them to 26.7% from three and 32.8% overall while they shot 46.7% and 54.5% respectively.

Ford led Saint Vincent with 14 points and 5 rebounds, while Capco added 12 points along with 5 assists. Simmons poured in 9 points off the bench, followed by Tom Kromka who had 8 points to match his game-high 9 boards.

W&J's leading scorers were Sean Stinelli with 14 points, Brian Graytok with 9 and Alex Richards and Christian Rohaus, with 7 each. The Presidents had Mike Zappala and Brian Lindquist lead the team with 6 rebounds apiece. 

The win moves Saint Vincent to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in PAC play as they gear up for their third consecutive home game Dec. 7 at 5pm against Catholic University in the Carey Center. Washington & Jefferson falls to 0-7 overall and 0-2 in the PAC.
