Tommie men push win streak to four

Senior guard Grant Shaeffer scored 12 of his team-best 17 points in the final 10:00 Wednesday night to help No. 12-ranked St. Thomas record a 72-61 win over visiting Macalester in MIAC men's basketball at Schoenecker Arena.

The Tommies (4-1 overall, 1-0 MIAC) ran their win streak to four and had only eight turnovers. They used a 26-8 run to build a 40-21 halftime lead after converting 53 percent from the floor in the opening half.

John Veil scored 15 points, Ryan Boll added nine points and seven boards, and Jordan Burich chipped in a game-high 12 rebounds. The Toms had a 27-3 advantage in bench points led by Connor Bair's 10 points and Will Dunn's nine points.

Macalester (4-2, 0-1) shot 35 percent in the first half but sank 54 percent after halftime to stay in contention.

The Scots' Michael Gutierrez scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half anmd added four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes.

St. Thomas plays Saturday at Augsburg (3 p.m.).
