Union downs RIT, 86-79 to clinch home playoff berth

SCHENECTADY, NY -- Senior William Hython scored 22 points with a game high 14 rebounds and Wade McNamara scored 21 points for the Union College men's basketball team in a 86-79 Senior Day triumph over the Rochester Institute of Technology Sunday. The win, along with victories by Skidmore and Vassar, clinched a home game for #2 seed Union. The Dutchmen will host #3 seed St. Lawrence Wednesday in a Liberty League Semifinal Game at a time to be announced.

Union finished the Liberty League season with a record of 10-6, and is 13-11 overall. RIT, which was eliminated from a playoff berth, finished at 8-8 for the league season and 12-13 overall.

The other senior for Union, Ryan Whelpley, scored 17 points on six of seven shooting.Zachary Bouton had 14 points with four assists and Deshon Burgess had a game best six assists and tied his career assist high total. Union outrebounded RIT, 38-35 and shot 48% with a 52% mark in the second half. Hython had 12 of his rebounds on the defensive side and recorded his 33rd career double-double.

AJ Horde led all players with 33 points, making 10 of 12 free throws, while dishing out five assists. Troy Pierre-Louis had 16 points on seven of nine shooting, and Mitch Herman led the Tigers with eight rebounds, and RIT shot 44% while also having a solid second half (a 56% field goal mark in the final 20 minutes).

Union took a 39-31 lead into halftime. Union led by as many as 15 in the first hlaf, (39-24), and Pierre-Louis hit a three-pointer to make it 39-31 Union with 41 seconds remaining. In the second half, Union led by 11 on a three from Wade McNamara with 18:22 to play. But a quick run of 9-0 in the next 1:42, capped by a three by Horde, pulled the Tigers to within two at 47-45. Union was up by seven with 10:57 to play at 63-56, but the Tigers came back again and got within two as late as 6:37 to play on a Wyatt Smith layup. It was the closest the Tigers could get as the Dutchmen 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win and clinch the home playoff contest.

During the regular season, St. Lawrence and Union split, each winning on the opposing court. Union lost 79-70 on January 23 but won in Canton, 70-68.
