Bears fall to Cardinals

POTSDAM, N.Y.- Plattsburgh State (19-4, 14-2 SUNYAC) defeated SUNY Potsdam men's basketball team (1-22, 1-15 SUNYAC) Wednesday night 93-62. Sophomore forward Josh Blagrove (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Ford) and freshman guard Nosa Onabor (Brooklyn, N.Y./Northside Charter) both led the Bears with 12 points. Xavier Thomas led the Cardinals with 15 points and nine rebounds including 11 for 11 from the free throw line, while Edward Correa added 14 points.

Plattsburgh jumped out to a 15-8 run during the opening minutes of the contest before play evened out between both teams. A three from Onabor got the Cardinal lead down to seven with five minutes to play in the first. Following the bucket, Plattsburgh's offense ignited with a 15-5 run that closed out the half with the Cardinals leading 47-30.  

Plattsburgh's momentum carried over into the start of the second half with another 11-3 run that lasted through the first five minutes. Senior guard Mitch Lamerson (Dansville, N.Y./Dansville) drained a shot from behind the arch followed by another layup from Lamerson and a fast break layup from freshman forward Serigne Kane (Brooklyn, N.Y./Brooklyn Prep) that put a dent in the Cardinal lead. The teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the half with the Bears gaining minimum ground. Plattsburgh took the 93-62 victory as the clock ticked to zero.

Senior guard Joe Estramonte (Greenwich, N.Y./Greenwich Central) finished with five rebounds, four assists and nine points for a total of 928 points in his career with two games left in the regular season. Lamerson tacked on seven points, while freshman guard Tyrone Adeyeye (Brooklyn, N.Y./Benjamin Banneker) and Kane each had six points with Adeyeye grabbing 10 rebounds for a game-high.

Kyle Richardson and Jonathan Patron each finished with 12 points, while Richardson recorded nine boards. Isaiah Johnson closed out the top scorers with 10 points for the Cardinals.

Potsdam is back in action this weekend when they travel to SUNY Geneseo to battle the Knights Friday at 7:30 p.m.
