Toms' wins streak ends at 16 to hot-shooting Augsburg

Brett Rasmussen scored 23 points to lead five Augsburg players in double figures and the hot-shooting Auggies scored a 98-89 home win over No. 4-ranked St. Thomas in Wednesday night's MIAC men's basketball play in Minneapolis.

Augsburg (14-8 overall, 9-8 MIAC) improved to 4-0 in February and ended a 21-game losing streak to the Tommies dating back 11 seasons.

The Auggies shot 63 percent from the floor and sank 26 of 32 free throws. They led 50-41 at halftime, saw the lead cut to 66-65 midway through the second half, but answreed with an 11-2 run to regain momentum.

Collin Olmscheid and Harry Sonie each scored 18 points and Joe Zangel added 16 for Augsburg.

Junior guard Grant Shaeffer scored a career-high 31 points for the Tommies (20-2 overall, 15-2 MIAC), who had a 16-game win streak halted.

UST took its first road loss of the season in 11 games and lost on the Auggies' campus for the first time 16 games.

UST had only six turnovers and shot 53 percent from the floor but surrendured its most points in a game over the last 11 seasons.

Cortez Tillman had 19 points, Jimmy Remke scored 14, and Taylor Montero scored 13 points.

The Tommies clinched a share of the MIAC regular-season crown two nights earlier with a one-point win over St. John's. They need one win or one St. Olaf loss over the final three games of the regular season to lock up the No. 1 playoff seed and solo championship.
