Earlham Men's Basketball Drops Road Contest at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Three Quakers finished in double figures, but Rose-Hulman's Matt Loesing tallied a game-high 21 points as the Fightin' Engineers defeated the Earlham College men's basketball team 73-65 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference (HCAC) action on Wednesday.

Freshman Isaiah Waire (15 points), freshman Nick Sands (14 points), and senior Taylen Alexander (11 points) were the three Quakers to finish in double figures. Freshman Alex Topalovic added six points and eight rebounds.

Along with Loesing's 21 points, Tyler Duffy added 12 points and four assists to lead the Engineers.

Rose-Hulman scored 12 of the game's first 14 points, but Earlham battled back to within a single points (15-14) when sophomore Elijah Wilson-Thomas nailed a three-pointer with 10:22 to play in the first half.

The Engineers counterpunched with a 15-3 run over the next six minutes. Trailing by 13, the Quaker defense stiffened and held Rose-Hulman without a point in the final four minutes of the half. In that time, Earlham tallied nine points and ended the half with a three-pointer from sophomore Colin Kimiecik to send the Quakers into the locker room trailed 30-26.

Earlham got within two points (34-32) early in the second half, but got no closer. Rose-Hulman stretched its lead to as many as 17 points with 3:34 to play in regulation. The Quakers ended the game on a 13-4 run.

The Quakers hit 23-52 (44.2 percent) shots from the field compared to 29-57 (50.9 percent) for Rose-Hulman. Both teams hit 12 free throws in the contest. The Engineers finished with 35 rebounds while the Quakers grabbed 26 rebounds.

Earlham returns home for its next two contests, against Hanover at 4 p.m. on Saturday and against Bluffton at 7:30 p.m. next Wednesday.
