Waynesburg upsets Saint Vincent, 73-64

The Waynesburg Yellow Jackets defeated the SVC Bearcats by a score of 73-64 in a Presidents' Athletic Conference matchup in the Carey Center.

The first half was a back and forth contest featuring several lead changes and hard-fought possessions. The Yellow Jackets scored first and were answered immediately with a pair of Jaylon Bell free throws. Bell found Austin Ford in the post on the next possession and Ford delivered, making the score 4-2, SVC. Senior Dan Sinwell converted a nice put back play under the hoop followed by two Pat Jones free throws to give the Bearcats a 4-point lead with 15:15 left in the half.
 
Following Jones points from the foul line, the Yellow Jackets scored five straight to take the lead.  Captain JC Howard answered with a hard drive down the lane before Waynesburg responded with a 6-0 run. Austin Dedert ended the run, converting two from the charity stripe and Bobby Swartwout scored in the post to regain a 17-16 Bearcat lead.
 
The Yellow Jackets responded on the next possession and Bell answered with his own step-back jumper to grab the lead once again. After Bell's two points, Waynesburg scored consecutively to gain a 4-point advantage. The Bearcats fought back, however, as Jones scored off of a Swartwout pass to come within two. Waynesburg continued to shoot the ball well, regaining a 7-point lead with a little over two minutes left in the first half. Howard drained a jumper followed by a deep trey to send Saint Vincent into the locker room trailing the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets, 30-28.
 
Both teams continued to battle throughout the second half. Saint Vincent scored first off a Dedert free throw and two at the charity stripe from Jones. After the first three Bearcat points, the Yellow Jackets put together an 8-0 run to take a 7-point lead with a little over 16 minutes left in the game. Ford grabbed a rebound and finished an and-one opportunity to end the Waynesburg run but the Yellow Jackets continued to put the ball in the net, scoring on their next two opportunities.
 
Swartwout scored four straight points and Jones drained a jumper to cut the score to 49-40 with 12:05 left in the contest. Jones continued to rack up points, driving to the rack and pulling up for a fade away before Howard netted a baseline three to cut the Yellow Jackets lead to 8. Waynesburg responded with two straight scores but the Bearcats continued to fight, scoring two straight buckets of their own highlighted by a Howard to Dedert alley-oop dunk.  Once again, the Yellow Jackets responded to make the score 61-52, Waynesburg.
 
Jones and the Bearcats kept pushing the pace, as Jones drained a trey and Bell converted a finger roll to make the score 64-58 Yellow Jackets with 3:10 left. Ben Klimchock netted a deep three with 52 seconds left but his trey wouldn't be enough as Saint Vincent fell to Waynesburg 73-64.
 
For Saint Vincent, Jones led all scorers with 20 points followed by 12 from Howard and 10 from Bell. For Waynesburg, DJ Ritchie netted 19 and BJ Durham scored 17.
 
SVC is now 11-2 in the PAC, 15-5 overall.  Waynesburg is now 7-6 in the conference, 7-13 overall.

The loss was the first at home this season for SVC, while the victory was the first road win for Waynesburg in 2015-16.
