Hood College Outlasts Knights in MAC Commonwealth Contest

FREDERICK, Md. - Senior Davon Hill (Clinton, Md. / Potomac School) came off the bench for 19 points to lead Hood past Arcadia, 63-60, in Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth action.

Hill went 6-of-9 from the field and 4-of-4 from 3-point range to lead a Blazer attack that connected on 56 percent of its field goals and 50 percent on 3-pointers. 

Daniel Wegener (Falling Waters, W.Va. / Broadfording Christian) grabbed nine rebounds.

Hood struggled early with turnovers, but a 3-pointer by Hill made it 11-10 in favor of the Blazers with 11 minutes and 18 seconds left in the half. The bucket started an 11-0 run that gave Hood a 19-10 lead with 7:34 on the clock. 

A lay up by Evan Slone brought the Knights within 21-17, but Hill answered with a 3-pointer with 3:48 left in the half. This time he sparked an 11-2 run that resulted in a 32-21 halftime lead for Hood. 

In the second half, Tanner Ruths (Stephens City, Va. / Sherando) connected on a 3-point field goal for a 52-41 lead with 5:31 remaining in the contest. Arcadia's offense began to gain momentum and a 14-3 run tied the game on a jump shot by Ryan Kelley for a 55-55 score with 1:31 left. 

On the other end, Malik Harris (Columbia, Md. / Archbishop Spalding) pulled in an offensive rebound, made the put back and was fouled for a 58-55 lead with 1:01 to go. Arcadia was not able to tie the game after that as the Blazers were able to hit just enough free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

John Landro led the Knights with 16 points. Brandon Thompson sank 4-of-7 3-point attempts on his way to 15 points. Kelley scored 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Alex Cohen finished with seven rebounds.

While Hood hit 20-of-36 field goals (56 percent), Arcadia shot just 38 percent (21-of-55). The Blazers were 8-of-16 from 3-point range, compared to just 7-of-27 for the Knights (26 percent). 

Behind the efforts of Hill, Hood's bench outscored Arcadia's 43-6. The Blazers held a 33-25 edge on the backboards. The Knights were able to stay in the game by forcing 28 Hood turnovers. 

The Blazers will look to stay in the win column on February 3 at Alvernia. Tip off is set for 8 p.m.
