Senior guard Cortez Tillman scored 11 of his 16 points in the second half and No. 5-ranked St. Thomas outscored Macalester 4-0 in the final 50 seconds to pull out a 67-61 MIAC men's basketball road win Wednesday night at the Leonard Center.

The Tommies (17-1 overall, 12-1 MIAC) had five players score in double figures as they ran their season win streak to 13 and improved to 10-0 in January over a 26-day span. UST kept its three-game lead atop the conference standings with seven games to go.

The Toms had only four turnovers and a 42-28 rebounding edge but needed every bit of those stats to help overcome one early run and one late run by the Scots (3-15, 1-12).

UST fell behind 16-7 in the first 10:00 and led just 27-25 at halftime. The Toms never trailed thereafter, but watched a late 15-3 Macalester run turn a 60-46 lead into a 63-61 score with 54 seconds to go.

After a timeout, Grant Shaeffer's pull-up jumper with 39 seconds remaining pushed the Tommie lead to 65-61.

On its next trip, Mac struggled to get a shot against the UST defense. The Scots drew a foul with 16 seconds to go but missed the one-and-one attempt. Jimmy Remke rebounded the ball, was fouled, and promptly sank two free throws for a 67-61 UST lead with :08 left.

After Mac missed a 3-point try, UST grabbed the rebound to close out the victory, its third on the road in the last five days.

For UST, Remke and Taylor Montero each scored 12 points; Ryan Saarela added 11 points and 11 boards; and Shaeffer finished with 10 points and six assists.

Wyatt Ferm had 21 points and 10 rebounds and Michael Guiterrez added 20 points for the Scots, who had only six turnovers.

St. Thomas has a bye on Saturday and returns to action next Wednesday Feb. 3 against Gustavus.
