No. 10 Marietta defeats rival Muskingum 108-97

NEW CONCORD, Ohio — The No. 10 ranked Marietta College men's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark for the third time this season as the Pioneers defeated Muskingum University 108-97 Wednesday (Jan. 27) evening. Marietta improves to 16-2 overall and 10-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Muskies fall to 5-13 overall and 2-9 in conference play.

Three Pioneers scored over 20 points as Marietta never trailed in the game. A.J. Edwards finished with 24 points, while Dillon Young and Anthony Wallace tallied 22 and 21 points, respectively. All three set new career highs in the game.

Young poured in 17 points in the first half sinking five three-pointers in the opening period. Edwards had a big second half notching 16 of his points after halftime. Wallace was nearly perfect at the charity stripe hitting 16-of-17 free throw attempts.

Eddy Grenert was also in double figures with 16 points. He grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Edwards pulled down six boards.

Muskingum's Jarrell Marsh led all scorers with 41 points. Marsh was 15-of-27 from the floor and connected on five three-pointers. He also led the Muskies with nine rebounds. Joshua Glass added 14 points and Jalen Paige finished with 10.

Marietta led 56-37 at halftime and was poised to run away with the game in the second half. As any good rival will do, Muskingum refused to go away quietly. The Muskies rallied in the second half and cut the deficit to six points, 90-84, on a trey from Jacob Geller with 5:46 left on the clock.

The Pioneers responded and quickly pushed the lead back to double figures. Three-pointers from Grenert and Young and eight straight free throws, six from Wallace and two from Grenert, secured the victory.

For the game, Marietta shot 48.6% (35-of-72) from the floor, 36.7% (11-of-30) from three-point range and 87.1% (27-of-31) at the line. The Muskies were 35-of-66 (53.0%) from the floor, 9-of-27 (33.3%) behind the arc and 18-of-20 (90.0%) at the line.

Muskingum edged the Pioneers on the glass, 37-36. Marietta forced 20 Muskie turnovers, while committing just 10.

Marietta travels to Baldwin Wallace University on Saturday (Jan. 30) for a 3:00 p.m. tip off.
