Tommies win on road, zip to 12-1 start

Senior Taylor Montero knocked down all five 3-point tries in a season-high 25-point output to lead No. 6-ranked St. Thomas men's basketball to Wednesday night's 85-73 road victory at third-place St. John's.

The Tommies (12-1 overall, 7-1 MIAC) kept a one-half game lead on second place St. Olaf (7-2) and ended SJU's home streak of 10 regular-season victories. They shot 51 percent from the floor -- making 10 of 16 from 3-point range -- and had only eight turnovers.

Montero moved into the Division III national lead for 3-point percentage at 55.7% as he has converted 39-of-70 treys on the season. He moved to 150 made treys in 99 career games.

Cortez Tillman added 18 points; Ryan Saarela had 11 points, 16 boards and five blocks; and Grant Shaeffer added 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.

Alex Schmitt had 22 points and Tyler Weiss added 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Johnnies (10-3, 5-3).

St. Thomas led 44-40 at halftime and used a 17-6 run to push the lead to 15 midway through the final half.

The Tommies play Saturday at St. Mary's.
