Late Surge Sinks William Paterson Men’s Basketball at York (N.Y.)

YORK, N.Y. – A late surge allowed host York, N.Y. (4-11), to pull away from William Paterson (7-7), 89-77, in men's basketball action Jan. 11.

 

Senior guard Bright Mensah (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack) posted 31 points and 10 rebounds, and junior forward Richy Espinal (Ridgefield Park, N.J./Ridgefield Park) collected seven boards while matching his career high with 13 tallies.

 

The Cardinals expanded a 43-31 halftime lead into a 51-35 advantage four minutes into the second half, but the Pioneers responded with a 19-5 burst to get within two (56-54, 10:11), including nine points from senior guard Manny Hernandez (Paterson, N.J./Paramus Catholic).

 

WP kept it close, including a 69-66 margin with 5:24 on the clock, but York scored nine of the next 11 points over the next two minutes (78-68) to seize control of the contest.

 

Junior guard Chad Coachman and freshman forward Ryan Smart each scored 19 points for the Cardinals. Senior forward Anthony Mason added nine tallies to his game-best 13 rebounds.

 

William Paterson will host Rowan Wednesday, Jan. 13, at 8:00 p.m.
