Manhattanville Outlasts Hunter, 84-75

PURCHASE, N.Y. – Four Valiants scored in double figures and the team received sparks from multiple players off the bench as Manhattanville College outscored Hunter College by 15 points in the second half to pull out an 84-75 victory in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Kennedy Gymnasium.
 
Senior Anthony Maestre (Bronx, N.Y./Mount St. Michael Academy)led all players with 19 points and also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals to lead Manhattanville (7-5). ClassmateJuan Camacho (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/New Horizons) added 17 points, while sophomores Alex Tuci (New Rochelle, N.Y./New Rochelle) and Dom Arena (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman) both netted 13 points – Tuci added a game-high seven rebounds and Arena also chipped in a game-best four assists as well.
 
Manhattanville also got solid performances off the bench from senior Andrew Winter (Queens, N.Y./St. Francis Prep), who contributed seven points, five boards and three assists in a season-high 27 minutes off the bench, and freshmanWillie Britton (Queens, N.Y./Monsignor McClancy), who added seven points and four rebounds.
 
The game got off to a frenetic pace early on, as the teams combined for 36 points in the first 5:41. The pace settled down very much after that point, with the Valiants going over six minutes without a field goal and Hunter jumping out to a 30-24 lead with 8:36 left. The Hawks led for the remainder of the half and headed into the half with a 47-41 lead after a layup by Vuyisile Beschta with 10 seconds left.
 
Tuci led the home team with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting in the opening half, followed by Maestre with nine points. Alex Mattina netted 14 points over the first 20 minutes as Hunter shot 18 of 33 (54.5 percent) from the field.
 
Hunter still led by five (57-52) with 13:45 remaining in the second half before Manhattanville went on a 22-4 run over the next nine-plus minutes to finally take control of the game. The Valiants went 10-of-16 from the field and limited the Hawks to 0-of-9 shooting with six turnovers during the span, with Maestre scoring six points and five other Valiants recording at least one bucket.
 
The Hawks did not go away, eventually whittling the lead down to four at 74-70 with 2:04 on the clock, but Camacho responded with a huge three that bumped the lead back to seven and Maestre countered a Hunter layup with one of his own to make it a 79-72 game with 57 seconds left and help seal the win.
 
Manhattanville shot 52.9 percent (18 of 34) in the second half to finish the game at 49.2 percent (32 of 65), while also limiting Hunter to just 30.8 percent (8 of 26) shooting in the final 20 minutes after a strong start.
 
The Valiants will close out non-conference play on Friday night, when the team travels to John Jay College for a 7:30 p.m. tip in the city.
