Stifling Defense Leads Men’s Basketball to North Country Tip-off Title

Potsdam, NY – The SUNY Canton men's basketball team played exceptional defense holding SUNY Poly to just 40 points as they won the North Country Tip-off with a 56-40 victory on Saturday afternoon.

The Roos (2-0) jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead and stretched their advantage to as many as 10 in the opening half after Matt Spencer(Gouverneur, NY) made a layup with 6:18 remaining. SUNY Poly trimmed the lead to four but Walt Jeter (Fort Drum, NY) knocked down a three-pointer with 24 seconds remaining to give the Roos a 28-21 lead at intermission. Sam Annorh (Queens, NY) led the Roos with nine points in the opening half, while Jeter added six.

The Wildcats (1-2) never got closer than three points early on in the second half as SUNY Canton extended its lead to as many as 20 en route to the convincing victory.

 

Jeter paced the Roos with 10 points and five rebounds, while Annorh added nine points, five assists and four rebounds. Adrian Williams(Brooklyn, NY) chipped in with eight points and Kam Peterkin (Harlem, NY) and Romario Fletcher (Queens, NY) added seven points apiece.

SUNY Canton held a big edge in points off the bench (23-6) and points off turnovers (17-11). For their performances on the court this weekend Peterkin and Jeter were named to the All-Tournament Team with Peterkin taking home MVP honors.
