MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Dec. 8, 2015) – Led by four players in double figures, host Huntingdon rallied in the second half for a 73-68 win over the Sewanee men's basketball team, Tuesday, inside Roland Arena.
The loss dropped Sewanee to 5-2 overall. After losing to Sewanee to open the season, and to Maryville last week, Huntingdon is now 4-2 overall.
After a quick start by the Hawks, the score remained close throughout the first 13 minutes. Neither team led by more than four points. There were also three ties and four lead changes during that stretch.
After a Clay Born jumper and two Jorden Williams free throws tied the game at 21-21, Sewanee opened a 16-4 run over the next five minutes. Four straight Huntingdon free throws temporarily slowed Sewanee with just over a minute to play. However, Williams made his third three of the first half to push the Tigers in front 37-32.
Sewanee eventually took a five-point lead, 39-34, into halftime.
The Tigers kept their lead through the first 10 minutes of the second half. Despite Huntingdon slowly chipping away at its deficit, the Tigers were led by their play inside the paint. Along with his second dunk of the game, Brody Stone had four points during the stretch.
Down 56-54 with 7:29 to play, the Hawks retook the lead for the final time. A three by Jarrod Pettus opened an 11-0 run by the home team over the next three minutes. Sewanee fought back with 4:05 left when freshman Cody Jones made a three. In fact, Jones scored the next five points which cut the Huntingdon lead down to two, 66-64, with 3:04 to go.
However, even after Keshonn Carter tied the game at 66-66 on the Tigers' next possession, Raheem Jones made a key layup that kept Huntingdon in front.
The Hawks then connected on 3-of-4 free throws under 30 seconds left to seal the victory.
Overall, Sewanee shot the ball well with a 44.0 field-goal percentage. That included a 9-for-19 effort (47.4) from beyond the three-point arc. The biggest difference in the game was second-chance points. Huntingdon grabbed 18 offensive rebounds, which led to 24 points.
After a rare stretch of two straight games with single digit points, Williams responded with a game-high 22 points. Jones also continued to play well early this season as the freshman added 15 points, five assists, and three rebounds.
Additionally, Carter finished with 12 points on 4-of-9 shooting.
Andre Ashley led Huntingdon with 18 points. Berry (15), Jones (12), and Brandon McLean (10) also finished in double figures.
Sewanee returns to action with a December 17th home contest against Piedmont. Tipoff is schedule for 3:00 p.m. inside Juhan Gymnasium.
