Saint Vincent downs No. 11 Marietta 85-80 in overtime

LATROBE, Pa. — Saint Vincent scored the final seven points of the game to upset No. 11 Marietta College in overtime, 85-80, Tuesday (Nov. 24) evening. The Pioneers slip to 4-1 on the season.  Saint Vincent improves to 2-1 on the young season.

A pair of free throws from Luis Garcia gave Marietta a seven-point lead, 72-65, with 43 seconds left in regulation. Saint Vincent's Jaylon Bell scored on a layup, stole the ball on MC's next possession and then tallied an old-fashioned three-point play to cut the Pioneers lead to two, 72-70, with 30 seconds left on the clock.

The Bearcats were forced to foul and Eddy Grenert hit both throws pushing the lead back to four with 19 seconds left. Dan Sinwell responded with a three-pointer six seconds later to make it a one point game.

Saint Vincent put Grenert back on the line with nine seconds showing on the clock. Grenert made one of two for a 75-73 MC lead. The Bearcats went back to Bell on the ensuing possession and he tied the game with four ticks left on the clock. Marietta got a final shot off but it was no good sending the game to overtime.

Bell started the extra period with a three-pointer. Brennan McKean answered with a trey of his own and then Garcia put the Pioneers in front, 80-78, with a layup. But Saint Vincent scored the final seven points as Marietta missed three straight from behind the arc.

Grenert led Marietta with 19 points. A.J. Edwards had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Garcia notched 14 points and McKean added 13 points. Dillon Young also grabbed eight boards.

Bell led the Bearcats with 31 points. Bobby Swartwout tallied 11 points and nine rebounds and Austin Ford finished with 11 points.

For the game, Marietta shot 40.6% (28-of-69) from the floor, 23.1% (6-of-26) from three-point range and 69.2% (18-of-26) at the free throw line. Saint Vincent was 32-of-70 (45.7%) from the floor, 7-of-19 (36.8%) behind the arc and 14-of-25 (56.0%) at the line.

Marietta edged the Bearcats on the glass, 46-43. The Pioneers turned the ball over 17 times, while Saint Vincent committed 15 turnovers.

Marietta is back in action on Wednesday (Dec. 2) when the Pioneers host Muskingum University for a 7:30 p.m. Ohio Athletic Conference opener.
