GALLOWAY, N.J. -- Bates senior Graham Safford had 30 points and 10 assists as the Bates men's basketball team won its first-ever NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament game by a 92-80 score over St. Vincent College Friday evening at Stockton University.

The Bobcats (20-6) will take on host Stockton on Saturday at 7pm at the Sports Center in a second-round matchup.

The win ties the 2014-15 Bobcas with the 2006-07 squad for the most victory in a season in program history. The 2005-06 team finished 20-6.

The Bearcats of St. Vincent end their season at 22-7. SVC is 0-3 in its NCAA tournament history, all within the past three years.

In spite of playing for the first time in 13 days and in an unfamiliar gym, the Bobcats shot 32-for-61 from the field for their third-highest field-goal percentage of the season (.525), and made seven of its first 13 three-point attempts before finishing at 7-16 (.438), tying the early-season win over Babson for the second-best three-point shooting of the season.

"To be honest, I'm surprised how well we've been shooting the last two days, but we were really efficient on offense," said head coach Jon Furbush. "We ran our stuff well, got really good looks, and the guys executed our stuff to a T."

Safford notched his fifth career 30-point game, his fourth 10-assist game this season and his fifth double-double this season. The two-year captain and recent First Team All-NESCAC selection made a career-high 16 of 19 free throws. Boornazian pitched in with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Senior Billy Selmon (Atlanta, Ga.) scored eight points, all in the first half as he kept the otherwise struggling Bobcats afloat offensively.

Sophomore center Malcolm Delpeche (Wilmington, Del.) led Bates to a 42-31 rebounding edge against the Presidents' Athletic Conference's best rebounding team, collecting a career-high-tying 16 boards before fouling out of the game with 2:42 left. Delpeche came up with a pair of big hoops after twin brother and forward Marcus Delpeche (14 points, 5 rebounds) first fouled out with 5:03 left.

"Malcolm was great," said Furbush. "He started out just getting every rebound in his area, and he protected the rim really well. On paper he had 16 rebounds, but with all the tipped balls he had his hands on, I told him I thought he should have had 22. And he said, 'You're right.'"

St. Vincent forward Sean Kett led four Bearcats in double figures with 26 points, 24 of them scored in the second half. Like Safford, he made his living on the line, making 16 of 20 free throws. Kett made 5-of-9 shots from the field and led SVC with eight rebounds. Jaylon Bell added 16 points but missed all seven of his shots behind the arc.

Bates led by as many as 22 points, at 60-38 with 11:46 left in the second half, but SVC scored 37 points over the next 10 minutes, drawing within nine points at 84-75 with 1:57 to go. Kett scored 19 points in that span while sinking 11-of-12 free throws.

St. Vincent entered the game averaging 11.7 turnovers per game, but committed 11 giveaways in the first half. The Bearcats settled down significantly in the second period, with just four turnovers, even as the pace of the game quickened. The Bearcats scored 55 points in the second half after managing only 25 in the first.

Boornazian's 22 points give him 983 in his career. He can join Safford as the 32nd member of Bates' 1,000-point club by scoring 17 or more points tomorrow.
