Seniors Shine on Senior Day

More news about: Lancaster Bible

The Lancaster Bible men's basketball team celebrated Senior Day in a big way as it was the five seniors who not only started the game, but dominated it as the Chargers won their regular season finale, 78-53 over Wilson at Horst Athletic Center. The win caps the best regular season in program history as the Chargers are 23-2 overall and finished 17-1 in North Eastern Athletic Conference play. Saturday's win, the 23rd of the year, breaks the program record of 22 set by last season's team.

Lancaster Bible's five seniors combined for 42 points, 27 rebounds and 10 assists as the Chargers capped a perfect regular season home record. The Chargers are 12-0 at home this season and have not lost a home regular season game since December 16, 2013 when they lost to Mount Aloysius, 85-78, a streak of 19 straight games.

Senior Albert Suniga led the way on Saturday as he had 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Suniga now has 1,285 points for his career, the 13th most in program history. Fellow senior Naheer Mirza added 10 points on Saturday, while senior Corey Leonard had nine points and eight rebounds on 4-of-6 shooting. Senior Dave Long chipped in with six points, five boards and two assists, while senior Jon Bird had four points, five rebounds and two assists.

Lancaster Bible held a 52-23 rebounding advantage, including a 17-5 edge on the offensive glass. Seven different players had five rebounds or more, while none had more than nine. Likewise seven players scored more than five points, but Suniga led the way with a modest 13.

"Unbelievable team effort today," Lancaster Bible Head Coach Marshall Tague said. "To out-rebound them by that much and have seven players with five or more boards, but none more than 10, that is pretty incredible. This was a tough one to get ready for after spending everything we had physically and mentally on Friday night against Gallaudet, but the guys are hungry and played well today."

When asked if there was a single player who helped get the team ready to go today, Tague's answer was of course a senior, Albert Suniga.

"Albert constantly pursues other player's best effort," Tague said. "He, along with the other seniors, wanted to win so badly today. They are winners and they don't like losing."

Along with the strong game put forth by the seniors, junior CJ Dunston added nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Herbie Brown had nine points and eight rebounds. Junior Dondre Perry had eight points and five boards, while John Morant III had four points in three minutes.

When asked to put the 23-2 regular season mark into words, Tague credited the team for never taking a day off and being ready to work almost every single day.

"I think we'll look back on this at a later time because we are still playing, but if you stop and think about it for a second, it's crazy," Tague said of the 23-2 mark. "It's just a huge accomplishment and you have to credit the guys because there are so many demands of them both on and off the court. They can't coast for a single day. Some of the scores may make people think it is easy, but it's not, nothing is easy."

The Chargers will now have a week off as they are the top seed in the NEAC Playoffs and will host the NEAC Final Four next Saturday and Sunday. Lancaster Bible will face either Keuka or Cazenovia in the NEAC Semifinals next Saturday at 2 p.m. SUNY Cobleskill has already punched its NEAC Semifinal ticket as well as they clinched the NEAC North Division title over Keuka on Saturday. The Fighting Tigers will face the winner of the Gallaudet / Penn St. Abington quarterfinal. The SUNY Cobleskill NEAC Semifinal game is scheduled for next Saturday at 4 p.m. at Horst Athletic Center or 20 minutes after the first semifinal has concluded. The NEAC Final will be Sunday, March 1 at Horst Athletic Center at 2 p.m.

"We will rest early in the week, find out our opponent on Tuesday night and start preparing for one team," Tague said of Lancaster Bible's plans this week.
