Tommie men reach 20 wins again

Grant Shaeffer scored 18 points with 8-of-9 shooting to lead No. 2-ranked St. Thomas to a 68-48 win over host Macalester in MIAC men's basketball play Monday night.

The first-place Tommies (20-1 overall, 15-1 MIAC) secured the program's 10th consecutive 20-win season, won their 10th road game, and ran their winning streak to 16. They locked up a first-round playoff bye and clinched a top-two conference finish for the 13th time in the last 14 years.

UST shot 50 percent from the floor, had only eight turnovers, and used a game-closing 20-7 run to pull away.

Conner Nord had 10 points and eight rebounds and moved his career totals to 984 points and 681 rebounds. Taylor Montero and Ryan Saarela each collected nine points, and Marcus Alipate scored eight.

The Tommies have a bye Wednesday and play Saturday at Concordia-Moorhead.
