Late Comeback Falls Short Against St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team fell for the third straight outing on Thursday night following a 73-68 Skyline Conference loss to St. Joseph's-L.I. Freshman Jamir Ferebee (Staten Island, N.Y.) led three players in double-figures with a team-high 15 points.

 

Mount Saint Vincent jumped out to its largest lead of the night 7:04 into the contest when Jesse Regina (Staten Island, N.Y.) hit a three-pointer to move the Mount in front 12-7. Following the triple, the Dolphins would maintain the advantage until a Sean McCarthy three-point play moved the visitors in front 19-17.

 

Mount Saint Vincent pulled back in front by four points following an 11-5 spurt capped by back-to-back three-point field goals from Kahlil Shorter (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Ryan Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) with 6:40 remaining in the first half.

 

St. Joseph's got back-to-back conversions from McCarthy to move back in front 29-28 as part of a 13-4 run that saw it pull in front 37-32 on a Billy Heenan triple with just under two minutes left before halftime. The Dolphins scored the final three points to get the halftime disadvantage to 37-35.

 

St. Joseph's shot better than 46-percent from the floor in the opening period and 55.6-percent from three-point range. The Dolphins converted at 43.8-percent in the first half and knocked in five of its eight three-point field goal attempts. The Dolphins held a 12-2 edge in points off of turnovers in the first 20 minutes, while the Golden Eagles scored 14 points in the paint. Heenan led all scorers at halftime with 10 points.

 

Mount Saint Vincent came out of halftime with the first six points to pull back in front 41-37 within the first two and a half minutes of the second period. St. Joseph's answered the spurt with a 20-3 run over 5:40 to take a 13 point lead with 11:50 left in regulation. The Golden Eagles went 8-for-12 from the floor over the run with Andy Laurent leading the way with seven points.

 

The Golden Eagles grabbed a game-high 14 point lead when Isaiah Moore gave the visitors a 65-41 lead with 7:15 remaining in regulation. Although St. Joseph's would not surrender the lead again in the game, the Dolphins put together a 15-4 run over a six minute stretch to pull to within 69-66 with 1:10 left. Ferebee scored six points in the run as the Mount went 6-for-10 from the floor, including a pair of three-point field goals.

 

Mount Saint Vincent would not be able to get its disadvantage under three points over the final minute of play and saw St. Joseph's knock down four free-throws over the final 56 seconds to secure the five point conference victory.

 

Mount Saint Vincent was held to 38.2-percent shooting after halftime and misfired on five free-throws in the second half. The Golden Eagles shot an even 50-percent in the second stanza and received 13 second half points from McCarthy.

 

McCarthy led all scorers in the game with 21 points, going 6-for-13 from the floor and 8-for-10 from the free-throw line. He added a game-high 12 rebounds and swiped a steal. Laurent finished the night with 16 points and seven assists, while Heenan and Evan Mohammed added 16 and 12 points, respectively.

 

Ferebee rounded out the night 6-for-14 from the floor on his way to his team-high point total with Antonio Johnson (Fort Johnson, N.Y.) and Ammad Alkhulaidi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) chipping in with 12 and 10 points. In his first career start, Andrew Curiel (Bronx, N.Y.) collected eight rebounds, while Matthew Sowah (Staten Island, N.Y.) handed out a team-high four assists and secured a team-high nine rebounds.

 

Mount Saint Vincent closed the game shooting 40.9-percent overall, but just 50-percent from the free-throw line. The Golden Eagles converted at a 48-percent clip and shot an even 50-percent from three-point range.

 

Thursday's loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 8-5 overall on the season and to 4-2 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Dolphins is a home date with league rival Mount Saint Mary on Saturday afternoon. Tip-off with the Knights is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
