Whitewater Routs Yellowjackets

After a frustrating loss on Saturday to UW-Oshkosh, the Yellowjacket men's basketball team made the long trek to Whitewater Tuesday afternoon in advance of Wednesday's WIAC tilt with the Warhawks Wednesday night. The hope for the Yellowjackets was to rebound from the agonizing home loss Saturday and get back on track in WIAC play. It wasn't going to be easy, however, as the Warhawks entered the game ranked 3rd in the nation by D3Hoops.com and sporting a 10-2 record. And on Wednesday, they played like a top-three team. Whitewater blitzed Superior early, en route to a 31-point victory, 88-57.
 
Not only was this loss by a wide margin, it was also devastating for the Yellowjackets because the loss dropped them to 1-4 in conference play. The game was close in the opening half, with both teams trading baskets and the lead. Whitewater took control late in the first half, as the outscored Superior, 15-6, in the last six minutes of the first half. Whitewater took a ten-point lead, 37-27, into the locker room.
 
The second half was all Warhawks. Whitewater shot a blistering 67.9% from the field in the second half while holding Superior to 31% shooting. Whitewater put up 51 points in the second half, outscoring Superior by 21 points in the half.
 
Superior was led by Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton), who scored 18 points. No other Yellowjacket scored in double-figures. Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) had eight points. Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) led the Yellowjackets with eight rebounds.
 
Whitewater was led by the duo of Quardell Young and K.J. Evans, who scored 19 and 18 points, respectively.
 
Superior was outscored in more ways than the scoreboard could show, as the Yellowjackets gave up 50 points in the paint, while only scoring 18 themselves. Whitewater scored 20 points off of 16 Superior turnovers, and Superior gave up 32 points to the Whitewater bench.
 
With the loss, Superior falls back to the .500 mark (7-7) and 1-4 in the WIAC. They will continue WIAC play Saturday, when the host a struggling UW-La Crosse team who got night off Wednesday. The opening tip is set for 3 p.m. at The Mertz.
