Yellowjackets Down Coe, Win 2nd Straight

More news about: UW-Superior

After a 19-day break, the UW-Superior men's basketball team took to the court in the most famous place Wisconsin has to offer: Wisconsin Dells. Superior shook off some holiday rust in the first half and rebounded in the second half to overtake Coe College (Iowa) and secure an 85-78 victory in the Wisconsin Dells Holiday Tournament.

Superior allowed Coe College to shoot 51.7% in the first half and it led to 42 points. Superior was able to stay in the game thanks to hot three-point shooting (5-for-12 in the first half), but they trailed at halftime, 42-39.

The second half might have been one of the longest halves in all of college basketball this season. Superior shot 25 free-throws in the second half while Coe College shot a total of 25 for the game. Superior has done a great job of getting to the line this season, an average of 23.8 attempts per game, and that statistic would only rise after this game. Superior attempted 36 free-throws and made  25 of those attempts. Their defense also picked up in the second half. They held Coe College to 11-of-28 shooting from the field while Superior went 12-24, including five more three-pointers. For the game, Superior was 10-of-18 from behind the arc.

Ty Ketz (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) led the charge from three-point land, as he went 4-for-8 en route to 21 points. Point guard Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) also put in 21 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Zach Schradle (Clayton, Wis./Clayton) led the team in rebounds with eight and he also scored 17 points and got to the line a game-high 11 times. Taking care of the ball is also a big part of the game and something the Yellowjackets have really improved from last season. They came into the game averaging just under 11 turnovers per game, and that average will drop again, as they turned it over just four times against Coe.

Coe College was led by Jacob Timm, who scored 19 points. Three other players also scored in double-figures.

With the victory, Superior improves to 6-5 on the season. They have another game in Wisconsin Dells tomorrow before they head home to get ready for UW-Oshkosh on Saturday. Tip-off tomorrow is set for 7:30 p.m. against Luther College.
