R-MC Hits 14 Treys, Records 29 Assists in 85-56 Win over Carroll

ASHLAND, Va. – Senior Chris Hamilton (Bellbrook, Ohio/Bellbrook) scored 17 points and hit five of his team's 14 three-pointers as the No. 22 Randolph-Macon men's basketball team thumped Carroll (Wisc.) 85-56 Monday evening in the first round of the R-MC Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers in Crenshaw Gymnasium.

Freshman Mike Silverthorn (Hackettstown, N.J./Blair Academy) nailed four treys and tallied a career-high 16 points for the Yellow Jackets (8-2). Senior Akeem Holmes (King William, Va./King William) added 15 points and sophomore Michael Taylor (Apex, N.C./Grace Christian) added 10 points, going 4 for 4 from the floor and 2 for 2 from beyond the arc.

R-MC hit 14 of 23 treys (60.9%) and had six different players bury three-pointers. The Yellow Jackets also had assists on 29 of 31 field goals. Senior Marcus Badger (Plymouth Meeting, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) matched a career-high with 10 assists.

The Yellow Jackets never trailed in the contest, jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first 4:30. The advantage grew to 10 at 19-9 midway through the first half and to 22 at 37-15 with 4:44 before R-MC took a 49-27 lead to the locker room at halftime. The Yellow Jackets were 9 of 14 from beyond the arc in the first period, with Silverthorn going 3 for 3 and Hamilton 3 for 5.

R-MC stayed hot in the second half, pushing the lead to as many as 36 at 77-41 with 8:25 remaining before posting the 85-56 victory.

The Yellow Jackets shot 58.5% from the floor (31-53) and held the Pioneers (5-3) to 35.5% on field goals (22-62). Kyle Keranen led Carroll with 15 points.

In the day's first contest, Salisbury defeated Baruch 65-51.

On Day 2 of the R-MC Coaches Classic sponsored by Kay Jewelers on Tuesday, Dec. 30, Salisbury will face Carroll at 5 p.m., followed by Randolph-Macon against Baruch at 7 p.m.
