Dubuque Snaps Bridgewater's Winning Streak

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Bridgewater College had its seven-game winning streak snapped Sunday afternoon as the Eagles fell in a tough defensive contest to Dubuque, 58-51, at the Daytona Beach Shootout.

Both teams struggled from the floor in the first half as both connected on less than 30 percent of their shots. Dubuque (10-1) made just 7-of-25 first-half attempts for 28 percent while Bridgewater (7-3) connected on just 8-of-32 shots for 25 percent.

The Eagles led by as many as nine points in the first half and led by five, 25-20, at the break.

Bridgewater used a 9-0 spurt to break an 11-11 tie to lead 20-11. Zach Hunter's layup broke the tie and a 3-pointer by Kyle Welty put the Eagles on top 16-11. Zach Hunter hit two foul shots and Aaron Adams threw down a dunk, making the score 20-11 with 6:55 left in the half.

The Spartans outscored Bridgewater 9-5 during the remainder of the half to slice the lead to five. Two free throws by Lucas Ware and a jumper by Mitchell Morrissey pulled Dubuque to within 20-15. Adams hit two free throws and Matthew Hunter made 1-of-2 at the line to put the Eagles up 23-15 with 2:49 left in the half. A jumper by Gage Hefferman and a free throw by Andre Norris once again cut the deficit to five, 23-18. Matthew Hunter and Hefferman traded layups in the final minute as the teams headed to the locker room with the Eagles holding a 25-20 advantage.

A three-point play by Matthew Hunter had the Eagles ahead 28-22 early in the second half, but the Spartans reeled off 10 straight points to take the lead. Jacob Mohlis hit two buckets before Tanner Cook and Norris knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers for a 32-28 Dubuque lead.

Bridgewater scored the next four points with Benaiah Wise's 3-ball tying the score at 32-32 with 12:42 to go.

The Spartans regained the lead with five unanswered points, but the Eagles battled back and cut the lead back to one, 38-37, with 9:03 left.

Dubuque then hit the Eagles with another spurt as a 7-0 run pushed the lead to eight. Mohlis hit a 3-pointer and Norris and Hefferman added hoops, giving the Spartans a 45-37 lead at the 6:35 mark.

Adams hit a 3-pointer for the Eagles, but Norris responded with a layup to keep Dubuque's lead at seven. Ed Reddick hit two foul shots while Hefferman made 1-of-2 for the Spartans, making the score 48-42.

Reddick then hit a short jumper and Keonte Dennis powered inside for a basket and the Eagles trailed by just two, 48-46, with 3:15 left.

Layups by Norris and Brandon Ferguson put the Spartans lead at six, but Adams worked inside for a layup to trim the margin to four, 52-48, with 2:16 on the clock.

Hefferman knocked down a big jumper for Dubuque and, after Reddick hit 1-of-2 at the line, the Spartans led by five, 54-49 with 1:39 remaining.

The Spartans worked the shot clock and Norris hit a jumper just before the shot clock expired to put Dubuque ahead by seven.

Bridgewater was unable to convert on two possessions and Mohlis hit two free throws with 25 seconds remaining for a nine-point lead. Reddick hit two foul shots for the Eagles for the final 57-50 score.

Reddick led the Eagles with another double-double performance as he finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds. Adams and Matthew Hunter added 11 points each for the Eagles.

Mohlis led three Spartans in double figures with 15 points. Norris scored 14 and Hefferman finished with 12.

After a cold-shooting first half, Dubuque warmed up and hit 50 percent from the floor in the final 20 minutes. The Eagles improved just slightly in the second half, hitting 32 percent to finish the game shooting 27.9 percent from the floor.

The Eagles did hold a slight advantage on the boards, 43-41, thanks to Reddick's work on the glass. Turnovers were also at 14 for each team.
