Rosemont Knocks Off Gwynedd Mercy in OT

ROSEMONT, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Basketball team suffered their first Colonial States Athletic Conference loss Saturday afternoon on the road at Rosemont, 103-98, in overtime.

The Griffins boasted six double-digit scorers with Arron Goodman leading the way with 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second double-double this season. Julian Hyden also recorded a double-double with his 15-point and 12-rebound performance His 12 caroms were a personal best.

Justin Knight with 16, Seth Heinicke with 14, Darnell Artis with 13 and Cedric Elleby with 11 rounded out the Griffins' scoring effort.

Gwynedd jumped out ahead early taking a 28-17 lead with a Goodman layup with under nine minutes to go in the half.  A Knight steal and ensuing layup would give Gwynedd their largest lead of the game 49-37 with just over a minute to go in the half.  Rosemont would score twice thanks to Marcus Thomas in the final nine seconds to cut the GM lead to 49-43 at the half.

The Griffins would continue to hold their lead in the second half until Rosemont took their first lead of the game 61-60 at the 12:03 mark when Dom Scafidi connected on a layup. Gwynedd stretched their lead back to six (80-74) when Artis connected on a three ball with 2:40 to go. Artis then would sink a pair of free throws with twenty seven seconds left to give Gwynedd five-point edge (86-81). 

Rosemont would connect on a three pointer by Charles Presley to cut the lead to two and after the Griffins missed a pair of free throws on their ensuing possession, the Ravens connected on one of two from the line but the second attempt was secured by Nadir Stukes. Scafidi would get fouled with 2.1 on the clock, only able to make the first of the two free throws where it stood 86-86 at the end of regulation.

The Griffins never saw a lead in the overtime period as the Ravens scored the first seven points of the extra session. GM would trail by as many as eight with just over a minute remaining.  A Hyden layup cut the deficit to three with four seconds left, but Rosemont sunk both free throws on the other end of the floor to secure their first CSAC victory.

Thomas led the Ravens (3-5, 1-2 CSAC) with a game-high 28 points. Scafidi added 21 while Stukes and Clayton Wolfe each had 18.

GM shot exactly 50.0% (34-of-68) from the floor, but just 22-of-37 from the charity stripe. Rosemont was 33-of-62 (53.2%) shooting wise.

Gwynedd will return to action next weekend participating in the Monarch Classic hosted by King's College. The Griffins will take on the host Monarchs Friday night at 8 p.m. and will square off against Wilkes on Saturday at 1 p.m.
