More news about: UW-Superior

After winning the first game of the Wartburg College Tournament Friday, the UW-Superior Yellowjackets took on the host team in the championship game Saturday afternoon. The Yellowjackets were looking to move to 3-1 on the season and put together a two-game win streak and momentum heading into Tuesday's matchup with Division II opponent Winona State. However, Wartburg College, who is off to a 2-0 start to their season, had something to say about that.

Superior didn't have a first half to remember, to say the least. Superior shot 7-of-27 from the field in the first half, but still managed to score 27 points thanks eight makes from the free-throw line, even though they shot 8-of-14 from the line. Superior committed seven first-half turnovers that helped allow Wartburg College attempt 36 feild goals in the half. Wartburg attempted 18 three-pointers in the first half, only making five of those attempts. Despite Superior trailing 33-27 at the half, overall, the game was almost even in every category part of the game.

In the second half, Superior knew they needed to make a run to overtake Wartburg. Unfortunately, Superior was never able to get the lead below eight points for the entire second half after Wartburg College made the first basket. Wartburg held Superior at arms-length for the whole half and led by as many as 15 points after halftime.

Wartburg's Cook Clay had a double-double in the game with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Cannon led Wartburg with 18 points and Nick Webber had 17 points and six assists.

Superior shot poor from the field, 22-of-63 as a team. Seniors Johnquez Brooks (North Las Vegas, Nev./Valley) and Caleb Burch (Eau Claire, Wis./Altoona) led the team with 19 and 12 points, respectively. No starter for Superior shot over 50% from the field. All Superior starters shot a combined 17-of-51 from the field.

All-Tournament Team: Brooks was the Yellowjacket named to the all-tournament team. In the two games Brooks had 36 points and nine assists.

With the loss, Superior falls to 2-2 on the season. Their next game will be on Tuesday at Winona State University. Tip off for the game is set for 8 p.m.
