Cortland Pulls Away in Second Half to Beat Farmingdale at Cortaca Classic

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland opened the second half on a 24-3 run to break open a tight game and the Red Dragons defeated Farmingdale State, 75-54, at the opening day of the Cortaca Classic.

In the second game of the tournament, Trinity College (Conn.) defeated host Ithaca College, 74-48. The predetermined tournament shifts to Cortland's Corey Gymnasium Saturday with Ithaca facing Farmingdale at 2 p.m. and Cortland playing Trinity at 4 p.m.

Junior Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) led a balanced Cortland attack with 14 points. He hit 4-of-9 shots from the 3-point line. Freshman James Morales (Mount Kisco/Fox Lane) scored 12 points and registered three steals, junior Shayne Martinez (West Haverstraw/North Rockland) finished with 11 points and three steals and senior Lamard Herron (Westbury) ended with 10 points, four assists and three steals.

Junior Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) chipped in with nine points and five rebounds. Freshman Carrel Joseph (Port-au-Prince, Haiti/Deer Park (NY)) led the Red Dragons with six rebounds and freshman Paul Burke (Central Valley/Monroe-Woodbury) dished out three assists.

Justin Bailey led Farmingdale (1-3) with 13 points and also grabbed seven rebounds. Trey Kinard scored 10 points, Eriq Williams totaled nine points and a team-high eight rebounds and Wilson Molina finished with five assists.

Cortland led 16-6 to start the game, but Farmingdale went on a 13-1 run and led 19-17 after a Williams layup with 6:12 left in the half. The rest of the half remained tight and Cortland led 30-27 at the break.

The Red Dragons scored the first six points of the second half on baskets by Carter, Matt McGowan (Lake George) and Morales. Bailey hit a 3-pointer for the Rams, but Cortland rattled off the next 18 points, including seven by Martinez and five by Estarfaa, to take a 54-30 lead with 10:58 left. The lead grew to as much as 34 points with 4:40 left before Farmingdale finished on a 17-4 run.

Cortland shot 57 percent from the field in the second half and 44 percent for the game. The Rams cooled off from 44 percent first-half accuracy and hit only 28 percent of their shots in the final 20 minutes.
