LOS ANGELES  — Joe Compagno went 4 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 from beyond the arc to lead the Occidental College men's basketball team with 11 points during their match-up with conference No. 2 Pomona-Pitzer Saturday.

Bu despite Compagno's hot hand, the Tigers were unable to find an offensive rhythm against Pomona-Pitzer's zone defense as they connected on just 34 percent of their shots in a 63-53 loss at Voelkel Gymnasium.

After Occidental guard Juwan Rice scored the first points of the game with a layup after the opening tip-off, the Sagehens responded with three straight unanswered three pointers to take a 9-3 lead.

While Oxy struggled to find success offensively, they managed to keep the game close by holding the Sagehens to just 37 percent from the field while forcing 15 turnovers.

The Tigers finished a low-scoring first half down just eight points with a score of 26-18.

Aside from the Sagehen defense, a string of fouls handcuffed the Tigers in the second half as Oxy's season points leader Kris Montoya was called for his fourth personal foul midway through the second half.  Due to his foul trouble and overwhelming help defense Montoya was held to just six points of 2-10 shooting.

Freshman double-double machine Andrew Johnson had an uncharacteristic night, as he was held to just nine points and six rebounds.

Fellow newcomer Jay miller scored nine points, while Kory Hamane added six points.

With the loss, the Tigers slip to 11-13 and 6-9 in SCIAC competition. The Sagehens improve to 18-7 and 13-3.

Kyle McAndrews led the Sagehens on senior night with 17 points, while Xavyr Moss and Jake Klewer both broke into double digits with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Occidental squad will look to capture some momentum going into the offseason during their final game of the 2013-2014 season at Redlands on Tuesday.
