UW-La Crosse Earns Third Seed for WIAC Tournament

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's basketball team earned 63-55 victory over UW-Stout Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall.  The Eagles improve to 16-9 overall and 10-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) in their regular season finale while the Blue Devils fall to 12-12 overall and 7-8 in the conference. 

With the win, UW-L clinches the third seed for the WIAC Tournament and will host a first round game Wednesday, February 26.  UW-Stout has clinched a berth in the league tournament.

UW-L led 11-7 with 13:33 remaining in the first half when UW-Stout used a 15-2 run to lead 22-13 with 9:12 left.  Jimmy Whitehead scored eight points in the run. 

The Eagles cut the lead to 25-21 with 5:25 remaining, but the Blue Devils scored 10 consecutive points to take their largest lead of the game at 35-21 with 2:23 left.  UW-L finished the half scoring the last nine points to cut the deficit to 35-30. 

UW-L scored the first seven points of the second half to lead 42-35 with 13:35 left.  UW-Stout went 9:35 without scoring from the end of the first half until Aaron Jenny hit a layup with 12:48 left in the game.  The Blue Devils trailed 42-35 when they used a 14-2 run to lead 49-44 with 7:20 remaining.  

UW-L responded with a 19-6 run to the end game.  The Eagles took a 53-52 advantage with 2:50 left on Calahan Skogman's jumper and Connor De Bruin made it 55-52 with 2:09 left after a pair of free throws.  Braden Tice followed with a three-point field goal and two free throws to make it 60-53.

UW-L shot 38.2% from the field, including 34.8% (eight-of-23) from three-point range, and 61.9% (13-of-21) at the free throw line.

Skogman led the Eagles with 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Tice finished with 11 points and Luke Tweed 10.  Trent Schmidt added nine points. 

UW-Stout, shot 33.3% from the field, including 42.1% (eight-of-19) from three-point range, and 50.0% (nine-of-18) at the line.

Whitehead led the Blue Devils with 16 points while Jenny finished with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  

UW-L returns to action Wednesday, February 26 hosting a WIAC Tournament First Round game.
